📋 Summary

The Tale of Compassion and Consequence

In this live performance of Circle Round recorded at Tanglewood, host Rebecca Shear presents a Korean-inspired folktale titled "Fighting Like Cats and Dogs." The story begins with a poor man living in a tiny cottage near the sea, accompanied by his two "companion animals"—a cat and a dog. Despite their later reputation, the story establishes that these two were initially the "very best of friends."

The Queen of the Sea and the Magic Pearl

Facing extreme poverty and unable to find driftwood to sell, the man discovers a "huge silver thing" on the shore—a giant fish that is weeping. Moved by compassion, the man decides, "I may be hungry, but I'm not heartless," and returns the fish to the ocean. The fish is revealed to be the Queen of the Sea, who had been trapped on land. In gratitude, she grants the man a "magical" pearl that can grant any wish. With this gift, the man improves his living conditions, wishing for a larger house and food, which he shares with his animal companions.

The Betrayal and the Failed Mission

Conflict arises when a nosy neighbor discovers the secret of the magic pearl and steals it while the man sleeps. The man, lacking a boat to cross the river, is left in despair. The cat and dog, demonstrating their loyalty, embark on a daring rescue mission. The dog swims the cat across the river, and they successfully retrieve the pearl from the neighbor's cottage. However, during the return swim, a misunderstanding occurs. When the cat tries to answer the dog’s persistent questioning about whether she still has the pearl, she opens her mouth to yell, causing the pearl to fall into the river and sink.

The Enduring Grudge

This accident triggers a bitter argument between the two friends. The cat later finds a fish on the riverbank and brings it home, only for the man to discover the pearl inside the fish’s belly when he slices it open. While the man regains his prosperity, the cat and dog never reconcile. They allow their "hurtful words" and "grudges" to define their relationship permanently.

The Moral Legacy

The story concludes by explaining the metaphorical origin of the phrase "fighting like cats and dogs." The narrative suggests that their inability to apologize or move past their bickering created a lasting rift. By framing the conflict around the refusal to forgive, the story serves as a lesson for listeners—both children and adults—about the importance of resolving interpersonal struggles. The podcast invites the audience to reflect on their own lives, encouraging them to "ask a grown-up" about their experiences with conflict and how they found "harmony" when dealing with difficult relationships. Through this whimsical folktale, Circle Round illustrates that while magical gifts can solve material problems, only communication and forgiveness can mend broken friendships.
