📋 Summary

The Tragic Case of Cheryl Petrie: A Calculated Betrayal

The story of Cheryl Petrie is a haunting example of how a person’s inherent kindness can be exploited by those they trust most. Cheryl, a 33-year-old single mother living in Port Orchard, Washington, was remembered by her community as "incredibly kind," "empathetic," and a "great listener." Despite working two jobs to support her children, she was unfailingly generous, even offering furniture and free candy to a college student she had befriended. However, this gentle nature stood in stark contrast to the life of her ex-husband, Roland Petrie, a man described as a "terrible romantic partner" with a history of infidelity and manipulation.

The Anatomy of an Absurd Plot

The central tragedy of this case lies in a bizarre and "insanely nonsensical" murder-for-hire plot orchestrated by Roland. Seeking to win back his ex-wife’s affection, Roland devised a scheme that can only be described as the actions of one of the "dumbest criminals ever." He hired his former prison acquaintance, a methamphetamine cook named Frederick J. McKee, to stage a fake abduction of Cheryl.

Roland’s plan was simple yet delusional: he would hire McKee to ambush and tie up Cheryl, and then, at the critical moment, he would "kick the front door in," use his "judo skills" to fight off the attacker, and emerge as the hero who saved her life. He believed that by playing the savior, he would force a reconciliation, telling himself, "Oh my goodness, you saved me, I love you, I need you."

The Failure of the 'Hero' Narrative

The plan fell apart due to Roland’s own physical vulnerabilities and poor planning. On the night of October 15, 1988, Roland intended to launch his rescue mission. However, suffering from "serious blood pressure issues," he stood up too quickly, fainted, and fell back onto his couch. When he regained consciousness, he was in such a "fog" that he simply went to bed, leaving his hired accomplice, McKee, to act alone.

Because McKee was unaware of the "setup" and simply believed he had been hired to carry out a genuine abduction, the situation spiraled into violence. When Cheryl arrived home, McKee ambushed her, forced her into the trunk of her own car, and "savagely" beat her to death when she attempted to fight back. Her body was later discovered in the trunk of her car near Lake Union, a location she had no reason to visit, while her purse had been discarded in the water.

Justice Served

The investigation into Cheryl’s death remained cold for 14 years. While initial suspects, such as a creepy former coworker named Albie Bratzweller, were investigated, it was not until 2002 that a breakthrough occurred. An inmate cellmate of Frederick McKee informed police of the truth. DNA evidence found on the "duct tape" used to bind Cheryl’s hands finally linked McKee to the crime.

Ultimately, both men were held accountable. Roland Petrie, who had already been incarcerated for a separate kidnapping attempt, was sentenced to 40 years in prison, while McKee received 20 years. The case remains a chilling testament to the dangers of narcissistic manipulation, where a man’s selfish desire to be perceived as a hero resulted in the senseless and brutal loss of an innocent life.
