📋 Summary

The Evolution of Slang and the Milestones of Adulting

In this episode of Eat Your Crust, hosts Krystal and Jisoo explore the intersection of modern internet culture and the quiet, incremental milestones of growing into adulthood. From the linguistic shifts in online slang to the domestic responsibilities of late-twenties living, the hosts reflect on what it truly means to be a "seasoned adult."

From "Caught Red-Handed" to "Caught in 4K"

Krystal and Jisoo dive into the evolution of language, specifically the transition from the traditional phrase "caught red-handed" to the modern digital-native slang, "caught in 4k." This phrase, often used in the context of streamers or viral video content, serves as a testament to how our vocabulary adapts to a world saturated with high-definition video evidence. The hosts note that this slang has spawned variations like "failing in 4k" or the more aggressive "biting the curb in 4k." They discuss how these terms have become staples in online echo chambers, such as the Livestream Fail subreddit, where users document silly or embarrassing moments in excruciating detail.

The Unexpected Joys of Adulting

Transitioning from slang to their personal lives, the hosts share moments where they felt a palpable sense of maturity. One notable realization was the appreciation for high-quality fruit. Krystal recounts a transformative experience with an expensive, "fiberless" mango that felt like a sophisticated upgrade from her childhood candy addiction. This shift—valuing fresh, quality produce over instant sugary gratification—is identified as a core "adulting" trait. They also discuss the desire to visit farmers' markets, noting that waking up early for non-obligatory, health-conscious activities is a definitive sign of leaving behind the hedonistic habits of youth.

Taking Ownership of One's Space

Home maintenance and the physical environment play a significant role in the hosts' perception of adulthood. Jisoo highlights a moment where she felt like a "real adult" while performing "weatherstripping" on a door. They agree that the shift from just living in a space to taking ownership of it—whether through decor, cleaning, or home improvement—changes the way they host friends. They reflect on how their social dynamics have evolved; conversations that were once purely about fun are now dominated by topics like furniture, egg freezing, and professional life.

The Professional and Domestic Divide

As the hosts navigate their late twenties, they observe that the barriers between them and their parents' generation are breaking down. Whether it is discussing coding languages with family friends or navigating the complexities of their own careers, they find themselves on more equal footing with older adults. They also touch upon the nuances of the modern workplace, noting how Gen Z’s casual approach to office attire and communication creates a different environment than the formal structures of the past.

Practical Responsibilities: The "Adult" Checklist

Finally, the episode highlights the mundane tasks that serve as markers of maturity, such as:

  • Grocery Shopping: Moving beyond pre-packaged items to purchasing fresh cuts of meat and interacting with butchers.
  • Resource Management: Portioning out meat and freezing it with labeled dates to ensure time and economic efficiency.
  • Prioritizing Comfort: Choosing footwear that doesn't cause blisters over "cute" but painful fashion, signifying a shift toward self-care.

Ultimately, Krystal and Jisoo conclude that while they may still feel like kids at times, these small, deliberate choices—choosing health, maintaining a home, and managing responsibilities—are the true indicators of their growth. They invite listeners to share their own "adulting" moments, emphasizing that recognizing these milestones is a confidence booster for the next phases of life.

📖 Transcript

Hi, welcome back to Eat Your Crest Podcast. I'm Krystal and I'm Jisoo.
I have a slang word for us to talk about today, and I think it's a interesting one to discuss, mainly just because it's truly a testament of slang evolving with us because of the world that we live in.
It'll make sense when I explain it further, but I feel like we all kind of know the phrase caught red handed.
And so this slang phrase is the evolution of that.
So the evolved version is now caught in 4k and it truly kind of shows because there's just so much like, video content, Streamers you know things that get uploaded to youtube or whatever And so whenever people do something like stupid or silly the easy comment is to be like wow I can't believe we just caught this on 4k.
There's a bunch of variations of it, too I think you mentioned biting the curb in 4k So it's all along the similar lines of catching someone doing something silly or stupid quote unquote in 4k I guess it's supposed to kind of emulate a Google search where you might be looking for a video but in super high definition.
