Unlike modern systems that leverage "deep learning" to predict the next likely word in a sentence, early chatbots were quite basic. Today’s AI, however, excels at processing vast amounts of information, leading experts like cognitive psychologist Geoffrey Hinton to express concerns that these systems could soon surpass the information-processing capabilities of the human brain.
One of the primary dangers of modern chatbots is their ability to produce coherent text. Because the output is clear, carefully considered, and sensible, humans have a psychological tendency to perceive the information as authoritative—respected, accurate, and important-sounding. Professor Emily M. Bender of the University of Washington warns that we must remain on guard against this illusion. We often mistake grammatical fluency for reliability, yet the chatbot is simply predicting the next word based on patterns it has learned, not based on an understanding of truth or reality.
Why do we feel as though there is a person behind the screen? Professor Bender explains that humans are "primed to imagine a mind behind language." When we interact with chatbots, we often provoke them—doing things that cause a reaction—by asking questions about their feelings, goals, or opinions. By doing so, we elicit responses that sound as if they come from a sentient entity, or a living thing capable of experiencing feelings.
However, it is crucial to remember that these machines do not possess a mind. They are not friends or sentient beings; they are simply sophisticated statistical engines. Even when we assign them human names like "Alexa" or "Siri," we are projecting our own human traits onto cold technology.
As chatbots continue to evolve, the distinction between human interaction and machine output becomes increasingly blurred.
