The Week Junior Show: A Year in Review

This special end-of-year episode of The Week Junior Show features a roundup of favorite stories and moments from 2025, as shared by members of The Week Junior team: Joe, Eve, Elena, Vanessa, Laura, and Rahul. The discussion spans personal resolutions, significant milestones for the magazine, and memorable stories that resonated with the team.

New Year, New Intentions

Instead of pressured "resolutions," Rahul prefers "intentions" and aspires to "do a bit of volunteering" at a local community kitchen. Elena echoes this sentiment, finding resolutions too pressuring. Her intention is to "take up ballet classes again," a hobby she enjoyed previously. This shift in perspective highlights a more gentle and achievable approach to personal goals for the new year.

Celebrating Milestones: The 500th Issue

Vanessa's top moment was the 500th issue in July. The team wanted to "mix this up into something clever," so they created a cover featuring a game where readers could spot cartoons of people who had been featured in the previous 499 issues. This "trip down memory lane" included figures like "Taylor Swift," "Joseph Coelho," "Albert Einstein," and "Greta and Malala." The cover was "absolutely jam packed" and required the team to revisit all previous issues, making it a truly special and emotional moment.

Beyond Animals: Ghost Stories and the All About Page

Laura, typically the magazine's "animals correspondent," surprised everyone by choosing her interview with author Danny Robbins about ghosts for the Halloween issue as her favorite moment. She was fascinated by his podcast and his children's book, which challenges readers to decide whether ghost stories are real or have rational explanations. Regarding the magazine itself, Laura's favorite feature was the "All About" page, particularly the one on sleep. She enjoyed uncovering facts such as the 17th-century practice of having "two sleeps" and the existence of "knocker uppers" in the 18th century, who were "employed to tap on people's windows with a stick and wake them up for work." This feature resonated with her personally, as she struggles with sleep and found the historical and scientific context helpful.

Football Dreams and Woolly Mice

Joe, a "big football fan," cherished his interview with footballer Aggie Beaver-Jones, who plays for Chelsea and England. He highlighted her amazing 2025, during which she won the Women's Super League, the League Cup, the FA Cup with Chelsea, and Euro 2025 with England. Joe also enjoyed writing a story about "woolly mice," created by Colossal Laboratories and Biosciences as part of their efforts to "bring back the woolly mammoth." The "beautiful, really cute pictures of the two mice on the page" made the story even more appealing. Researchers edited the genes of mouse cells to give the mice features found in mammoths.

Book Awards and Arsenal's Victory

Elena's favorite moment was the Week Junior Book Awards. She described the ceremony as "amazing" and noted the palpable "excitement and the passion in the room." Working on social media that evening was stressful but rewarding, especially seeing first-time winners like Claire Harlow, author of Tight Magic. Elena also loved the cover issue about Arsenal winning the Women's Champions League. As a "big Arsenal fan," she was thrilled to see this victory celebrated on the cover. She even attended the second leg of the quarterfinal against Real Madrid, feeling like "a part of it."

Dragons, Biscuits, and Anniversaries

Eve's highlight was interviewing Dean Dubois, the director of the How to Train Your Dragon films, a "dream come true" for her. She also enjoyed a feature on the "All About" page, dedicated to biscuits. She and Laura had been "campaigning for years" to do this feature, and the 100th anniversary of chocolate digestives by McVitie's provided the perfect opportunity. She learned fun facts, such as "jammy Dodgers are named after Roger the Dodger" and that "oat-filled biscuits, such as Hobnobs, are the best for dunking in tea." Eve's love for "dark chocolate digestives" even inspired the feature.

A Decade of Week Junior: Advice to 10-Year-Olds and K-Pop Demon Hunters

Rahul's personal highlight was The Week Junior's 10th birthday. The team had "a little party amongst the team" and invited "some famous friends and family to give some advice to their 10 year old selves." This advice, which included "being yourself, not worrying about what other people think," made up the front cover and a "lovely little story." Rahul also enjoyed the entertainment story on "K-pop demon hunters," inspired by the Netflix film that became a surprise hit. He noted the film's unexpected popularity and the fact that the director's love of K-pop as a child inspired the film. His children were so taken with the film that they "dressed up as K-pop demon hunters" for Halloween.

Real or Rubbish: A Close Call

The episode concludes with the results of "Real or Rubbish," a weekly segment where Bex has to guess whether a story presented by a team member is true or false. Eve reveals that there were 50 "Real or Rubbish" segments this year, with The Week Junior winning 24 and Bex winning 26. This marks the third year in a row that Bex has won, but the close margin suggests that "2026 could be the year" for the team to finally beat her.
