📋 Summary

Introduction

This episode of the MrBallin podcast delves into three chilling, true-crime narratives centered on the theme of cannibalism. Each story explores the darkest corners of human nature, ranging from the domestic horrors of a serial killer to the desperate survival instincts of plane crash survivors and the systemic failures that allowed a monster to thrive in Canada.

The Cranley Gardens Horror: Dennis Nilsen

In 1983, a plumber named Mike discovered a “meaty substance” clogging the drains of an apartment complex in North London. This discovery led to the arrest of Dennis Nilsen, a man who confessed to killing at least 15 young men between 1978 and 1983. Nilsen’s modus operandi involved befriending men at pubs, luring them to his apartment, and killing them by strangulation or drowning. His behavior was deeply macabre; he would keep the corpses in his apartment for months, treating them as companions, bathing them, and even sleeping next to them. When the pipes became blocked with human remains, he attempted to dispose of the bodies under floorboards or through the plumbing, an act that ultimately led to his downfall. He expressed no remorse and died in prison in 2018.

Survival and Desperation: The 1972 Andes Flight Disaster

On October 13, 1972, Uruguayan flight 571 crashed into the Andes Mountains with 45 passengers, including a rugby team. The survivors faced extreme conditions, including freezing temperatures and starvation. As their food supplies vanished, the survivors were forced into an “unthinkable position”: becoming “reluctant cannibals.” They chose to consume the remains of the deceased—starting with the pilots—to maintain their strength. Their ordeal lasted over two months, during which they endured an avalanche and the psychological toll of hearing that search efforts had been called off. Eventually, two survivors trekked for nine days across the mountains to reach help, leading to the rescue of the remaining 14. Their story remains a harrowing testament to the human instinct for survival.

The Piggy Palace: Robert Pickton

Perhaps the most heinous of the tales is that of Robert Pickton, a Canadian pig farmer who turned his property into a slaughterhouse for human victims. Starting in the 1990s, Pickton used his charity, the “Piggy Palace Good Time Society,” as a front to lure women from Vancouver’s marginalized Downtown Eastside to his farm. He murdered dozens of women—confessing to 49—by strangling them or injecting them with antifreeze. He would then butcher his victims like livestock, feeding remains to his pigs or processing them through a rendering plant, which meant victims were potentially integrated into products like gelatin, candy, and cosmetics. Some remains were even ground into sausage and served to neighbors and unsuspecting community members. Despite repeated warnings from witnesses like Bill Hiscox, police failed to act for years due to apathy toward the victims' lifestyles. Pickton was eventually convicted of six murders, though evidence suggested his crimes were far more extensive.
