📋 Summary

The Fantastic Fiddle: A Tale of Justice and Magic

The Shepherd’s Burden and the Mysterious Gift

The story follows Pablo, a diligent young man working for a wealthy, "stingy" rancher. Despite tending the flock for a full "decade," the rancher refuses to pay him, claiming he never made such a promise. Exhausted and mistreated, Pablo’s fortunes change when he encounters an old woman in the pasture. Moved by his kindness in sharing his "bread and cheese," she gifts him a "battered leather case" containing a "magic fiddle." She reveals that the instrument is "touched with magic," capable of playing music that forces anyone who hears it to dance.

The Unjust Dismissal

When Pablo discovers the fiddle's power—causing his sheep to dance uncontrollably—he is interrupted by the rancher. The rancher, described as "crabby and ill-natured," berates Pablo for not working hard enough and fires him on the spot. When Pablo rightfully demands the wages he earned over his "10 years of hard work," the rancher denies ever promising payment and threatens to call the sheriff. Left "penniless," Pablo is forced to leave the ranch, taking only his fiddle and his determination.

The Power of Music as a Tool for Truth

After struggling as a busboy in town, Pablo encounters the rancher again at a restaurant where the man is loudly complaining about the food. Seizing the moment, Pablo pulls out his fiddle. As he plays, the restaurant turns into a scene of chaotic joy as the diners, including the rancher, are compelled to dance. Pablo uses this leverage to confront his former boss: "It was wicked of you to withhold my wages... And I won't stop until you pay me the money I deserve."

Justice Served in the Courtroom

Despite the rancher’s attempt to have Pablo arrested as a "musical menace to society," the truth prevails in the courtroom. When the judge demands proof of the rancher's claims, Pablo begins to play his "fantastic fiddle" once more. The judge and the courtroom spectators are swept into a dance, forcing the rancher to finally admit his deceit. He confesses, "I promised him I'd pay his wages and that I didn't follow through," and even offers triple the amount to stop the music.

Conclusion

With his hard-earned wages secured, Pablo finally gains the freedom to "make his way in the world." The story serves as a whimsical yet profound lesson on integrity, the importance of keeping one's promises, and the idea that justice—sometimes aided by a bit of magic—will eventually find its way to those who have been wronged.
