📋 Summary

The Discovery at the Weijin River

In July 1984, the tranquility of a small town in Liaoyuan City, China, was shattered when an old farmer discovered a "naked charred corpse" near the Weijin River. The local police, lacking experience in major crimes, initially concluded it was a suicide. This theory was primarily based on the presence of a "single set of footprints" found on the riverbank, which matched a pair of "red sandals" found near the body. The officers assumed the victim had walked to the river alone and set herself on fire.

Detective Soon’s Skepticism

Detective Soon Eugene, a sharp and often perceived as "arrogant" investigator, challenged the suicide narrative. He pointed out the absence of a "gas can or any other container" at the scene, arguing that it was highly improbable for someone to douse themselves in fuel and walk for miles without leaving a trace of the accelerant. Despite his colleagues' resistance, Soon insisted on treating the case as a homicide. His investigation gained momentum when he discovered that the victim was Zhao Xiaolian, a local woman who had been reported missing by her brother.

Uncovering the Web of Deceit

Soon’s investigation took a darker turn when he discovered Zhao’s diary, which detailed her growing resentment toward her husband, Li, for prioritizing money over his family. When police questioned Li’s boss at the supply company, they learned that Li was not on a "business trip" as claimed, but had been absent due to a "family issue." The discovery of a photograph of Li’s ex-girlfriend initially led the police to suspect a crime of passion, but this lead proved to be a dead end.

The Warehouse Connection

A pivotal breakthrough occurred after the local government provided the police with bicycles, increasing their mobility. A tip from a factory worker redirected the investigation toward an unsolved robbery involving "eight tons of steel pipes" from a warehouse. Detective Soon interviewed Ho Lai Cheung, a warehouse manager who appeared nervous. Ho eventually implicated Li in the theft. However, the true nature of the conspiracy was far more sinister than simple corporate greed.

A Calculated Betrayal

The investigation culminated in the realization that Ho Lai Cheung had orchestrated the robbery and used Zhao’s husband, Li, as a pawn. When Zhao discovered the illicit activities, she became a liability. Ho lured her to the riverbank under the false pretense of reuniting her with her husband. In a brutal act of violence, Ho "sexually assaulted Zhao" and then set her on fire. Furthermore, it was revealed that Ho had already murdered Li with a "hammer" days earlier to silence his partner.

Seeking Justice

Detective Soon successfully trapped Ho by sending him a fake signal—having Zhao’s siblings publicly announce they were being interviewed by the police. Ho, believing the murder remained undiscovered, left a forged note pretending to be Li. Soon engaged a "handwriting analysis expert" to prove the letter was written by Ho, not the deceased husband. Confronted with the evidence and the discovery of Li’s body, Ho confessed to both murders. Ultimately, the quest to cover up the theft of "expensive steel pipes" led to the execution of Ho Lai Cheung, closing a dark chapter in the community’s history.

In 1984, in a small city in northeastern China, a security guard stood outside of a warehouse, working an overnight shift.
The guard heard a noise coming from some bushes nearby, but he didn't think much of it because this was a safe town and usually the hardest part of his job was just staying awake.
But suddenly, two thieves in ski masks emerged from those bushes and they rushed the guard.
They grabbed him and they slammed his head against the outside wall of the warehouse, and the guard fell to the ground in a daze.
