How can I keep my exercise eco -friendly?
Thanks for asking. This week on Do You Really Know, we commit to helping you get fit.
Tune in for answers to exercise -related questions and practical advice on how to stay healthy and in shape.
One of the biggest challenges that we have been facing and will continue to face in coming years is protecting our planet.
So it's worth reflecting on how we can exercise in a more eco -friendly manner.
We turn to exercise for leisure, entertainment and to stay fit and healthy, but not many people realise that the carbon footprint can be significant.
Of course that's particularly true for high profile international events like the FIFA World Cup which is taking place in Qatar this winter.
But even for the vast majority of us who aren't involved in professional competition, there are still things we can do to reduce the environmental impact of our exercise.
Well, I've been a gym member for years now.
That can't have much impact, can it?
Think again. It really can but a lot of it depends on your routine.
Spoiler. If you're driving to the gym that's one bad habit to reconsider already.
Depending on how far away the place is why not bike, run or walk there instead?
A lot of people go to the gym because it's convenient having a dedicated space with all the necessary equipment.
But actually machines like treadmills and exercise bikes consume a lot of electricity and they take a lot of energy to manufacture and transport to start with too.
Not to mention all the lighting that's required in gyms throughout opening hours.
So the carbon footprint of going to the average gym is actually relatively high.
Alternatives include doing your workout at home or at the park where you can also reconnect with nature as a bonus.
Even basing your routine on bodyweight exercises is helpful rather than relying on equipment -based ones.
Finally, keep your post -workout showers to the strict minimum length to save water and opt for plant -based sources of protein rather than meat.
What about clothing and accessories?
Sportswear is actually one of the worst types of clothing when it comes to carbon footprint.
It's almost always made from plastic and needs replacing fairly regularly.
Next time you're in a sports store, look at the product labels to see where items have been made and what materials they're made up from.
More often than not everything is outsourced, factory made and shipped long distances.
Another tip is to replace plastic water bottles with a reusable one.
Likewise you can replace packaged protein bars with individual snacks that you've either made yourself at home or bought in bulk to cut down on packaging.
Really it comes down to just being more self aware and conscious about your choices and actions.
If you love going to the gym, then it's worth signing up to one that highlights its eco -friendly practices or ditch the gym completely and favour walking, running and home workouts instead.
There you have it. Now you know how to keep your exercise eco -friendly.
In under three minutes, we answer your questions and help you understand the true meaning behind the trends, concepts and acronyms that are making headlines.
