Huberman advises viewing 10 to 30 minutes of sunlight within an hour of waking and maintaining consistent exercise times to keep these internal oscillations precisely aligned.

Ultradian Rhythms

Beyond the daily cycle, our focus is governed by "ultradian rhythms"—cycles of approximately 90 minutes. These cycles are driven by the release of neurochemicals like acetylcholine and dopamine. How we perceive time in the moment (prospective) versus how we remember it (retrospective) is controlled by neuromodulators: dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin.

  • Dopamine and Norepinephrine: These molecules act as "fine slicers" of time. When levels are high, we perceive time as passing more slowly in the moment because our brain is capturing information at a higher resolution. This is why trauma can lead to "overclocking," where a high-arousal event is perceived in ultra-slow motion and "stamped down" into memory with extreme precision.
  • Serotonin: Conversely, higher levels of serotonin are associated with an underestimation of time passage.

The Paradox of Memory and Experience

There is a fascinating, paradoxical relationship between how we experience time and how we remember it. Experiences filled with novelty and excitement trigger dopamine, making the event feel like it is passing "very fast" in the moment. However, because those experiences are encoded with high density, we look back on them as having lasted a long time. Conversely, boring or repetitive experiences feel slow in the moment but shrink in our retrospective memory.

Actionable Tools: Habits as Time Anchors

Huberman suggests that we can leverage the dopamine system to structure our lives more effectively through habits. By placing specific, habitual routines at fixed intervals throughout the day, we "mark" the beginning of particular time bins. This not only reinforces motivation but also provides a functional framework for our day, allowing us to manage our mental resources more efficiently.
