  2. Phase-Based Scheduling: Divide the 24-hour day into three phases to align with neurochemical signatures:
    • Phase 1 (0-8 hours after waking): High levels of norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine. This is the optimal window for habits with high limbic friction.
    • Phase 2 (9-15 hours after waking): Serotonin levels rise, supporting a calmer state. Use this time for "mellow" habits that require less override of limbic friction.
    • Phase 3 (16-24 hours after waking): Focus on deep sleep and low light to allow for the consolidation of neural rewiring—the physical basis of habit formation.

The 21-Day System for Consistency

To build sustainable habits, Huberman suggests a 21-day cycle where you attempt six habits daily, aiming to complete four to five. This "permission to fail" approach prevents the need for "habit slip compensation" (trying to over-correct after a missed day). Once a 21-day block is complete, assess which habits have become reflexive. Only once these are consolidated should you attempt to add new ones.

Breaking Bad Habits

Breaking a habit is difficult because the behavior often occurs before conscious intervention is possible.
