Adolescents are essentially "self-sampling" their environment to test which behaviors lead to social success or fear, driving the natural urge for "dispersal"—moving away from primary caregivers toward peer-centered social structures.

The Neurochemistry of Social Bonds

Healthy emotional maturation relies on the ability to form bonds, which are driven by specific neurochemical systems:

  • The Seesaw of Dopamine and Serotonin: Healthy relationships oscillate between calming, serotonin-driven activities (touch, eye contact, quiet time) and exciting, dopamine-driven activities (adventure, play, shared goals).
  • Oxytocin: Often called the "trust hormone," oxytocin facilitates social synchrony. It increases our awareness of others' emotional states, helping us align our internal states with our partners during conflict.
  • Vasopressin: This molecule is linked to the intensity of attachment and, in some species, dictates behaviors related to monogamy, highlighting the biological roots of our social preferences.

Am I focused internally or externally?", we gain agency over our feelings.

made us happy or sad or depressed or lonely or we're all inspiring now one thing that is absolutely true is that everyone's perception of emotion is slightly different, meaning your idea of happy is very likely different than my idea of what a state of happiness is.
