The Making of a Cult Leader: Glenn Taylor Helzer

This episode of Morbid explores the early life and psychological unraveling of Glenn Taylor Helzer, a man who would eventually become the center of a chilling criminal investigation known as the "Children of Thunder." Set against the backdrop of the year 2000, the narrative begins with the mysterious disappearance of an elderly couple, Ivan and Annette Steinman, and the subsequent double murder of Jennifer Valerin and James Gamble, which eventually links to Helzer.

The Steinman Disappearance and the Woodacre Murders

In July 2000, Ivan and Annette Steinman vanished from their home in Concord, California. Their daughter, Nancy, discovered signs of distress: their cats were locked away without food, personal papers were scattered, and Ivan’s wristwatch was found ripped from his wrist. A neighbor reported seeing two men resembling "Mormon missionaries" at the home shortly before the couple went missing. Simultaneously, in Marin County, Jennifer Valerin and her boyfriend James Gamble were found shot to death in a studio apartment owned by Jennifer’s daughter, Selina Bishop. Selina herself was missing, and investigators soon discovered she had been dating a man she referred to only as "Jordan," who had convinced her to open a bank account in her name to hide "a large sum of money" he claimed he was about to inherit.

The Rise and Fall of Glenn Taylor Helzer

As detectives investigated the missing Selina Bishop, they discovered that "Jordan" was actually Glenn Taylor Helzer. Helzer, born in 1970, was a bright, charismatic individual raised in a devout Mormon household. His grandfather, Doyle Sorensen, a man with fringe fundamentalist beliefs—who once claimed to have seen a "corporal" Jesus Christ standing on his front lawn for several hours—exerted a massive influence over young Taylor.

Taylor struggled deeply with the rigid standards of his faith, citing feelings of being "consumed with guilt" regarding perceived sins, which led to a suicide attempt at a young age. By 14, he began experiencing "audible messages" and was told he had a "gift of revelation," leaving him unable to distinguish between divine guidance and darker forces.

A Life of Extremes and Mental Decline

Helzer’s transition into adulthood was marked by a lack of moderation. After a mission in Brazil, where fellow missionaries noted his increasingly "manic" behavior and "apocalyptic vision of the future," he returned to California. His marriage to his high school sweetheart, Anne, failed rapidly due to his controlling nature and his obsessive, "full throttle" consumption of things previously denied to him by his strict upbringing, such as cable television and pornography.

Professionally, Helzer found initial success as a financial advisor at Morgan Stanley, leveraging his charm to excel at cold calls. However, by the mid-1990s, his life spiraled. He began "testing out the sinning side of life," neglected his hygiene, and was eventually fired. In 1998, he was diagnosed with "bipolar disorder, type 1, with manic features" and subsequently excommunicated from the Mormon Church due to drug use and a lifestyle that diverged sharply from its teachings.

This background sets the stage for the investigation into how this once-promising young man, burdened by religious trauma and untreated mental illness, would eventually lead his brother Justin and others into a web of violence, positioning himself as a figure beyond the accountability of the church—a man who, in his own mind, had become the "word of God."
