The Twisted Path of Jerome Brutus: A Psychological Descent into Violence

This episode of Morbid delves into the early life and criminal escalation of Jerome "Jerry" Brutus, a man whose name became synonymous with horrific violence in Salem, Oregon, during the late 1960s. Often referred to as the "Foot Fetish Slayer," Brutus’s life serves as a chilling case study in how childhood trauma, unchecked fetishes, and a complete lack of empathy can converge into a life of serial murder.

A Childhood of Neglect and Sadism

Born in 1939, Jerry Brutus was raised in a volatile and unsupportive household. His father was unstable, and his mother, Eileen, was described by Brutus as a "stubborn" and "selfish egotist" who openly favored his brother. Eileen’s treatment of Jerry—including her overt disappointment at his very existence—was profoundly abusive. A pivotal moment occurred when Jerry was five; he found a pair of discarded high-heeled shoes in a junkyard. His mother’s reaction was not merely to discipline him, but to force him to watch her burn the shoes and lock him in his room, a sadistic act that solidified his fascination with the taboo. This early experience, combined with his mother’s refusal to explain sex, caused Brutus to fuse sexual excitement with secrecy, shame, and eventually, violence.

The Escalation of Dark Impulses

As an adolescent, Brutus’s fantasies took a sinister turn. He began digging a hidden tunnel on his family’s farm, fantasizing about keeping a girl captive there. By age 16, he had moved from stealing undergarments to actual assault, using a knife to force a neighbor to undress. His pattern of behavior—stalking, choking victims into unconsciousness, and stealing shoes—became a way for him to exert power in a life where he felt otherwise dominated by his mother. Despite being institutionalized briefly as a teenager for assaulting a girl with a pipe, the medical establishment failed to recognize the severity of his pathology, diagnosing him with an "adjustment reaction of adolescence" and discharging him after only nine months.

The Double Life of a Family Man

Brutus’s adult life was a stark dichotomy. He married a young, naive woman named Ralphine, with whom he had two children. While his professional life as a radio engineer appeared stable, his home life was marked by coercive control. He forced his wife into nude photography sessions involving spiked high heels and nylons, further projecting his distorted views on her. Despite Ralphine’s attempts to set boundaries, Brutus remained deeply disturbed. The birth of his second child, Jason, triggered a crisis; after being barred from the delivery room by Ralphine—who feared his possessiveness—Brutus interpreted the rejection as a betrayal, which served as a catalyst for his transition from assailant to murderer.

The Transition to Murder

In January 1968, Brutus murdered 19-year-old Linda Slossen, an encyclopedia salesperson who had stopped at his home. After killing her, he engaged in necrophilia and photographed her body, keeping her left foot as a trophy in his freezer. Ten months later, he murdered Jan Whitney, a young woman whose car had broken down. Brutus’s ability to hide these crimes while living with his unsuspecting wife and children—and even while police were investigating a separate incident on his property—highlights the terrifying, calculated nature of his double life.

As the hosts of Morbid note, Brutus’s pathology is uniquely disturbing because of his sudden, violent shifts—from an attentive father to a sadistic killer who viewed his victims as objects to be defiled, photographed, and even turned into macabre household items like paperweights. This account serves as a haunting reminder of the "shittiness" of his upbringing and the unpredictable, horrific ways in which trauma can manifest when left unchecked.
