Welcome to a new episode of English Vocabulary Booster.
My name is Lara and I'm a SALSA certified English teacher.
Learning new vocabulary usually takes a long time, but we'll do it in a way that's easy, quick and efficient.
In every episode, we'll learn how to use five new English words or expressions, so that you too can start speaking like a native.
So let's get learning.
Hello you guys and welcome back.
I hope you're doing well and that you're staying safe wherever you are.
We're finally getting out of quarantine here in Spain.
So soon we're going to be able to travel.
So I'm looking forward to that.
And yeah, hopefully I'm going to be able to see my family soon.
And maybe we'll do a special episode from another country.
So let's listen to today's story, which is about organs.
Okay.
I have to tell you what happened last weekend.
So Mason had been telling me he wanted to go ziplining because he had never tried it.
He's a lot more adventurous than me.
So I told him I'd go with him, but that I wouldn't do it.
So we get there and he starts making fun of me and telling me I didn't have the guts to do it, that I was too scared.
He was being so annoying.
Like I had to bite my tongue.
Otherwise, I would have said something I'd regret later.
Well, I don't know how he did it.
But after like half an hour, I got so tired of him.
I decided to do it.
So I get all ready and when the guy says go, I jump, screaming at the top of my lungs.
And let me tell you, it was incredible, really.
It was the best feeling ever.
Anyway, I get all the way down and I wait for Mason.
And I'm waiting and waiting.
After one hour, I finally see him coming.
And guess what?
He had walked all the way down.
He said he'd had a change of heart and decided to do it another time.
But you know what?
I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
In fact, I've already told Mason I want to go again, but he doesn't want to.
I think he's too scared.
What a relief not having to do like a thousand voices in one episode.
I just did one and it was my voice and that's it.
Anyway, let's look at today's expressions.
Number one, have the guts.
He starts making fun of me and telling me I didn't have the guts to do it.
If you have the guts to do something, do you have enough courage to do it or not?
Yes.
If you have the guts to do something, it means you have the courage to do it, that you are brave enough to do it.
Oh, and in case you're wondering what the guts are, the guts are the part of, like the organs that you can find inside your belly, inside your stomach.
So it would be your stomach, your intestines, all these things together.
They are considered, they're called guts.
And I'm not sure why they are connected with courage.
So would you have the guts, for example, to go skydiving?
I definitely wouldn't have the guts.
I don't have the guts for a lot of like basic normal activities, like even cycling for me.
It's an activity that requires courage because I'm scared of everything.
But I definitely wouldn't have the guts to go skydiving.
Expression number two, bite one's tongue.
I had to bite my tongue.
Otherwise, I would have said something I'd regret later.
If you want to say something but bite your tongue, do you say it in the end or not?
No, if you want to say something but bite your tongue, you don't say it in the end.
Careful, you're not literally biting your tongue.
Okay, don't do that because that hurts.
It's just an expression.
And what are some of the reasons for biting your tongue and not saying something?
Well, the main reason, I think, for biting your tongue would be, for example, during an argument.
Maybe you're about to say something rude or something hurtful and you decide to stop yourself.
You bite your tongue and you don't say it because you don't want to hurt the other person, just because you're very angry in that moment.
Was there ever a time when you wanted to say something but then bit your tongue and didn't say it?
I think I've become pretty good at biting my tongue, which is not necessarily, I think, a negative thing.
I think it's actually a good thing, because I think when I was younger, I was much more impulsive than I am now.
So whenever I would get in an argument – you know, with a friend or with, I usually don't get in arguments with friends, but like with my mom or my sister or my boyfriend, at the time I would say whatever was on my mind.
And usually that would have consequences even after the fight.
But now, if I, for example, get in a fight with my boyfriend which luckily doesn't happen often, but sometimes it happens, not really a fight but like a discussion then sometimes I would want to say something, but I will bite my tongue and not say it so that I don't hurt him or, you know, I don't make the situation worse.
Expression number three, scream at the top of your lungs.
I jump screaming at the top of my lungs.
If you scream at the top of your lungs, do you scream loudly or quietly?
Actually, so I wrote this question and then I was like, hmm, can you actually scream quietly?
Like what would that sound like?
It would probably be something like, which I don't think it's considered screaming.
So no, it's the opposite.
Screaming at the top of your lungs means screaming super, super loudly.
And what can make people scream at the top of their lungs?
Well, obviously, it's a very strong emotion.
It can either be from fear, for example, or even excitement, you know, because maybe you just won a game or your favorite team just won a game.
And so you scream at the top of your lungs.
Yes.
When was the last time you screamed at the top of your lungs?
So I remember that very clearly.
And it was my friend David's fault.
So he sent me and I'm saying fault.
So he sent me a video, like a TikTok video.
He sent it through WhatsApp.
So I'm watching the video and he looks like a regular you know funny TikTok video and I get to the end and it's one of those videos, you know, where it gets scary all of a sudden because, like you see an image of something that's super scary.
And oh my gosh, I got so scared and I screamed at the top of my lungs.
My boyfriend was in the other room.
He also got super scared because he'd heard me.
So I hate those type of videos.
Don't send them to your friends.
Please stop.
Expression number four, have a change of heart.
He said he'd had a change of heart and decided to do it another time.
If you want to do something and then have a change of heart, do you still do it or not?
No, if you want to do something and then have a change of heart, it means that you've changed your mind, so you're not going to do it.
And if you have a change of heart, which of these things can change?
Your opinions, your intentions, or your feelings?
It can actually be all three.
So it can be your opinion.
You can have a change of heart.
Maybe you meet someone, you think they're nice, and then, you know, you realize that they're not.
So you have a change of heart. or your intentions.
Maybe you want to go to the gym, but then you have a change of heart and decide to stay home and watch TV.
That's me.
Or even your feelings.
So let's say you're in love with someone, but then, for whatever reason, you have a change of heart and you are not in love anymore.
When was the last time you had a change of heart?
Um, so obviously that happens quite often, I think for, you know, most people.
Um, so I think the last time though was a couple of days ago.
So my boyfriend and his friends always meet up on Wednesday and they have dinner together.
And me not, you know, speaking the language super, super fluently, because they all speak Spanish.
Um And the fact that they're very, very close and they've been friends for a really long time, I sometimes feel a little uncomfortable.
And so at first I decided I was not going to join them last Wednesday, but then I had a change of heart at the last minute and I decided to join them.
I was a little uncomfortable, but it wasn't too bad.
Expression number five, do something in a heartbeat.
But you know what?
I do it again in a heartbeat.
If you do something in a heartbeat, how long have you thought about doing it?
A long time or no time at all?
If you do something in a heartbeat, that means that you do not stop and think about it.
You just do it.
So what are some things that you would do in a heartbeat?
Things that do not require you, you know, thinking about the pros and cons.
Well, should I do it?
Should I not do it?
No, things that you would do just like that in a heartbeat without even thinking about it.
Um, I think, um, probably helping my family if they're struggling.
I would do that in a heartbeat, like I wouldn't have to think about it.
And if I want to be a little selfish, I'm going to say probably being a movie, because it's my.
You know, it's always been my dream to like act.
So if they asked me if I wanted to be in a movie or even a play like a theater play, I would do it in a heartbeat without even having to think about it.
And that is it for today.
