Welcome to a new episode of English Vocabulary Booster.
My name is Lara and I'm a SALSA-certified English teacher.
Learning new vocabulary usually takes a long time, but we'll do it in a way that's easy, quick and efficient.
In every episode, we'll learn how to use five new English words or expressions, so that you too can start speaking like a native.
So let's get learning what's up.
You guys welcome back.
So let's talk about this week's topic, which is alcohol.
Oh my gosh jane, how much have you drunk?
You're completely wasted.
Who me?
No, i'm just a little tipsy.
I don't know why, though i Only drank water.
What are you talking about?
I've seen nothing but booze at this party.
Come on, let's go outside.
You need some fresh air and some food so you can sober up.
Also, you need to stay hydrated.
Otherwise, you'll be super hungover tomorrow.
Where did you say you found the water?
It's right there.
Sweetie, this?
This says vodka.
Oh...
I thought the water just tasted weird here.
All right.
So what did you guys think of my impression of a drunk person?
I don't know how well I did it.
I don't have a lot of experience.
Honestly, I was just trying to do what I see in movies.
But let's get into it.
So expression number one, waste it.
You're completely wasted.
If you are wasted, how drunk are you?
Very drunk or just a little?
If you are wasted or completely wasted, you are very, very drunk.
So what are some symptoms of being wasted?
It really depends on the person.
But usually when you say that someone's wasted because they've drunk too much, usually they can't think properly.
Sometimes they can't even walk really.
You might even pass out, which means you might even lose consciousness.
So these are some of the most common symptoms.
When was the last time you were wasted?
Guys, this is a terrible topic for me because I have no experience.
Well, I have like little experience, but not.
Not too much.
So I think the last time, I don't think I've ever been wasted actually.
Like I've been drunk, but not to the point where I would refer to myself as wasted.
So yeah, I just never got to the point, which I think maybe it's a good thing, you know?
Expression number two, tipsy.
I'm just a little tipsy.
If you are a tipsy, how drunk are you?
Very drunk or just a little?
If you are a tipsy, so this is different from being wasted, you are just a little drunk.
You know, it's only the beginning and you can stay tipsy and not actually get wasted.
So what are some of the symptoms of being tipsy?
How do you feel?
Well, one of the most common symptoms I think is feeling lightheaded.
So when kind of like your head feels lighter in a way.
And a lot of times you kind of laugh more easily.
So you giggle and you know, you start making jokes and you feel a little, let's say, more comfortable with yourself.
When was the last time that you were tipsy?
So I remember that clearly because again, I hardly ever drink.
So I think it was over a year ago and I was in Madrid and we went to this place.
And again, I never drink.
So I had a glass of wine and I forget if I had one or maybe a little more than one.
And by the end of it I was just, I started to feel, like you know, a little happier and a little more relaxed.
I was with other people and I started to feel more comfortable and just like more social and more fun.
Expression number three, booze.
I've seen nothing but booze at this party.
Can kids drink booze?
No, kids cannot drink booze because booze is a synonym for alcohol.
And now, which is more likely to be called booze?
A bottle of beer or a bottle of tequila?
It's going to be the bottle of tequila because usually booze is used to talk about hard liquor.
So tequila, vodka, rum, all of these.
Is the word booze formal or informal?
It's definitely informal.
So, you know, when you're talking to a friend, you're planning a party, you can say, hey, who's bringing the booze, for example?
Where can you buy booze in your country?
So I'm in Spain right now and you can find booze at the supermarket and anybody can buy it really.
I mean, I'm pretty sure they need to check your ID, but I don't really know if they do it.
In the States, you're going to have either liquor stores.
There are some stores that have like a liquor section, but not necessarily.
Not all stores do carry booze in the States.
Sober up.
You need some fresh air and some food so you can sober up.
If you sober up, are you more or less drunk than before?
If you sober up or have sobered up, you are less drunk.
So you feel a little bit better.
Do you always feel great after sobering up?
Well, no, it goes in stages.
So at the beginning, you're going to feel a little bit better.
So you're going to feel less drunk and maybe, you know, less whatever you're feeling.
And then you can get to the point where you've sobered up completely.
So you're not drunk anymore, but maybe you're still not feeling great, because maybe you still feel nauseous or tired or whatever.
Do you know of any remedies that can help you sober up?
So, once again, I have little to no experience, but from what I've heard, apparently food can help you sober up.
I don't know why.
I don't know if it like soaks up the alcohol in your body or something like that.
And also drinking water can help you sober up faster.
Expression number five, be hungover.
You need to stay hydrated, otherwise you'll be super hungover tomorrow.
What are you hungover?
Before, during, or after drinking alcohol?
You are hungover or have a hangover.
You are hungover or have a hangover.
It's two different words.
Today we're talking about hungover.
So you are hungover after drinking alcohol.
And if you are hungover, what symptoms are you likely to experience?
Again, it depends how much you've drunk.
Because if you haven't drunk too much, maybe you just have like a light headache or you know, maybe you feel a little nauseous.
But some people, if they're like really, really hungover, they're going to wake up feeling terrible.
Sometimes they will need to take an aspirin or something to relax. feel better.
Sometimes they even throw up or cannot really eat, or they don't want to drink anything because it makes them feel sick.
How long are people usually hungover for?
Again, totally depends and it totally depends both on the person and on how much you've drunk.
But I would say like from the moment you wake up, probably like what, three, four hours.
Sometimes people are hung over for a whole day.
So what remedies have you heard of that can help you feel better when you are hungover?
So again, I've actually had to Google this because I wasn't sure, because I've never really felt hungover before.
Um, which I'm glad, like I felt maybe a couple of times, I felt slightly hungover and that's why I was like okay, I'm not drinking again, because it doesn't make sense.
I don't want to put my body through this.
Um, you know, just to have fun for a couple hours that I have to spend like 10 terrible hours the day after.
So to me, it's not worth it, but it's my personal opinion.
Uh, but usually what they say is, um, drink lots of water.
Eating can also help you.
And then another thing that can help you if you're hungover I don't know if that's true or if that's a myth, maybe you guys can tell me but is actually drinking a little bit of alcohol.
Not get drunk again, but drinking a little bit of alcohol can help you feel better if you're hungover.
Again, not sure if it's true or if it's not true and I'm not going to try it, but you guys can if you want to and let me know what you think.
And that is it for today.
