📋 Summary

The Tragic Case of Denise Huber

This podcast episode from Morbid delves into the heartbreaking and senseless murder of Denise Huber, a 23-year-old woman whose disappearance in 1991 left her family and investigators searching for answers for years.

A Life Cut Short

Denise Huber was described as a "multifaceted" and "brilliant" young woman. Born in Modesto, California, she was known for her intelligence, athletic prowess in basketball and softball, and a genuine "love of learning." Her friends and family remembered her as a "bubbly" individual who was "everyone's dream date." Her life was defined by her adventurous spirit and her close-knit relationship with her parents, Dennis and Lone Huber, who respected her autonomy, even allowing her to stay in California to finish her senior year of high school while they moved to Texas.

The Night of the Disappearance

On June 2, 1991, Denise attended a Morrissey concert at the Forum in Inglewood with a coworker, Rob Calvert. After the show, they spent time at a restaurant in Long Beach before she dropped him off at his apartment around 2:00 a.m. The following day, Denise failed to return home. Her mother, Lone, immediately grew concerned, sparking a search that led to the discovery of Denise's 1984 Honda Accord on the side of the Corona Del Mar freeway. The vehicle had a flat tire and there were "skid marks" suggesting she had stopped suddenly, yet Denise was nowhere to be found. Police noted there were no signs of a struggle and that nearby emergency call boxes were within walking distance, making her absence even more perplexing.

The Frustrating Investigation

As the investigation unfolded, authorities were met with a lack of leads. While bloodhounds tracked her scent briefly beyond the car, the trail went cold, leading police to believe she had been "taken away" in another vehicle. Despite the family's tireless efforts—which included hiring a private investigator named Logan Clark, appearing on America's Most Wanted, and partnering with the Adam Walsh Resource Center—the case eventually stalled. The family lived in a state of limbo, with Lone Huber describing her life as simply "existing" while waiting for news of her daughter.

A Chilling Discovery

Years later, a chance encounter involving a suspicious Ryder truck in Dewey, Arizona, broke the case open. Elaine Canalia and Jack Court, who were conducting business with a man named John, noticed a truck that appeared to have been abandoned for months. Trusting her "gut feeling," Elaine recorded the license plate number. This action led police to discover that the truck had been stolen from Orange County, California.

When authorities searched the property, they found no signs of drugs but discovered a padlocked chest freezer in the back of the truck. Inside, they found the "nude body of Denise Huber," who had been missing for three years. The scene was gruesome; there were "frozen blood" and "body fluids" on the floor of the freezer, indicating she had been killed elsewhere before being stored. John Familaro, the homeowner, was promptly arrested, marking the beginning of a dark realization for the Huber family and the investigators who had spent years searching for the truth.
