📋 Summary

The Dark Descent of Robert Hansen

This episode of Morbid delves into the disturbing life and crimes of Robert Hansen, a prolific serial killer who operated in Anchorage, Alaska. Despite his high body count, Hansen often escapes the notoriety afforded to infamous figures like Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer, a reality the hosts attribute to his remote operating base in Alaska and the tendency for such cases to "get lost in the shuffle" of true crime discourse.

A History of Frustration and Manipulation

Born in 1939 in Iowa, Hansen’s early life was marked by social isolation, severe acne, and a persistent stutter. His father, a strict Danish immigrant, forced him to work long hours in the family bakery. These early struggles, combined with being forced to abandon his natural left-handedness, fostered deep-seated resentment. His criminal trajectory began in 1960 when he convinced a 16-year-old employee to help him burn down a school bus garage. His therapist at the time diagnosed him with an "infantile personality," characterized by "childlike hysteria" and a "clingy fixation on others."

The "Respectable" Predator

After moving to Alaska in 1967, Hansen cultivated a facade of normalcy. He was a successful business owner and a skilled hunter, even entering trophies into the prestigious Pope and Young record books. To the public, he was "Bob the Baker," a respectable citizen. However, this persona masked a predatory nature. Hansen became a regular at the "Tenderloin District" in Anchorage, a hub for sex workers and illicit activity. He harbored a deep-seated hatred for women, viewing them as objects to be demeaned. His MO involved elaborate fantasies where he insisted women make the first move, only to dismiss them as no longer "decent" once they engaged in sex work—a classic "incel" mindset that fueled his violent impulses.

A Pattern of Failed Justice

Throughout the 1970s, Hansen’s path of destruction was frequently ignored or mishandled by law enforcement. In 1971, he kidnapped a customer, and only days later, the body of Celia Van Zanten was found, having frozen to death after being bound and slashed—an early indication of his signature hunting ritual. Despite being identified by victims like Robin Patterson, who escaped his clutches, Hansen consistently avoided serious repercussions. In one instance, police failed to secure a search warrant for his wallet, which contained the address of his intended victim’s father, allowing him to walk free. His privilege and his ability to manipulate respectable figures in the community allowed him to evade justice repeatedly.

The Escalation to Murder

By the late 1970s, Hansen’s behavior escalated into full-blown serial murder. He admitted to killing an unidentified woman known as "Eklatna Annie" in 1979, whom he hunted through the wilderness after his truck got stuck. He continued to target women, including Roxanne Eastlin and Joanna Messina. The hosts emphasize the horrific nature of his crimes: after kidnapping and raping his victims, he would fly them into the Alaskan wilderness, release them, and hunt them like animals—a real-life manifestation of The Most Dangerous Game. The episode concludes with the chilling reality that many of his victims remain unidentified, and his reign of terror continued until his eventual capture, which the hosts promise to detail in the upcoming second part of this series.
