📋 Summary

The Tragic Case of Sarah Porter: A Chilling Tale of Betrayal

In this episode of the Morbid podcast, hosts Alayna and Ash delve into a disturbing true crime case involving Sarah Porter and her husband, Harold "Butch" Knight. What began as a seemingly ordinary relationship spiraled into a calculated act of domestic violence, leaving a family devastated and a perpetrator on the run.

The Meet-Cute and Early Red Flags

Sarah Porter, a respiratory therapist, first met Butch in 1995 while caring for his mother in Fenville, Michigan. Despite an 18-year age gap and skepticism from friends and family, the two married in 2001. Initially, their life appeared to be a "fairy tale," characterized by shared interests like kayaking and visiting lighthouses. However, Sarah’s daughter, Roxanne, noted a darker side to Butch, describing him as condescending and prone to shifting personalities. As time progressed, Butch’s lack of ambition and his controlling, possessive behavior became increasingly apparent, with Sarah acting as the primary breadwinner for their household.

A Failed Attempt at a Fresh Start

In 2007, the couple's relationship began to deteriorate. In a desperate attempt to save their marriage, Sarah suggested moving to Maine. While they lived there for seven years, the underlying issues remained. Eventually, Sarah decided to leave Butch and returned to Michigan. However, the separation was short-lived; after receiving a letter from Butch claiming he was "doing the list of things" she wanted him to change, Sarah allowed him to move back in with her in Michigan. Their life together resumed, with Sarah continuing her demanding nursing career while Butch remained unemployed, spending his days in a recliner.

The Brutal Crime and Subsequent Flight

On January 11, 2015, the situation turned fatal. A 911 dispatcher received a call from a man who nonchalantly admitted, "I strangled her. She's dead and laying on the living room floor." The caller, who refused to identify himself, stated he was getting ready to "leave the country." Authorities discovered that Sarah had been dead for two days. Financial records showed that Butch had emptied their accounts and purchased a firearm prior to the murder.

Following the crime, Butch taunted the family with letters, claiming he could "get away with murder" because he had studied crime television. He also fabricated a story about selling drugs to justify the killing, though police found no evidence to support this claim. In a bizarre final act, he included $2,000 in a package to cover Sarah’s cremation costs.

The Manhunt

Butch’s trail eventually led to Maine, where he was captured on surveillance footage with dyed black hair, attempting to hide his identity. He told a motel owner he was "snowmobiling," despite having no equipment. To this day, Butch remains at large and is considered one of Detroit’s "most wanted." Sarah’s daughter continues to seek justice, hoping for the day he is caught and forced to answer for his actions in court. The hosts conclude the episode by reflecting on the tragic nature of the case, emphasizing that no one should ever have to fear their spouse, and warning against the disturbing reality of domestic violence.
