The Tragic Murder of Sherry Rasmussen: A Cold Case of Betrayal and Police Corruption

The Discovery of a Crime

On February 24, 1986, John, a mechanical engineer, returned to his townhouse in Los Angeles to find his wife, 29-year-old Sherry Rasmussen, dead. Sherry, a dedicated and accomplished director of nursing at Glendale Adventist Medical Center, had been brutally killed. The scene was chaotic: a balcony door was smashed, the home was "absolutely trashed," and Sherry’s BMW was missing. She had been beaten, shot three times in the chest—twice at point-blank range through a quilt—and suffered a human bite mark on her arm.

The Flawed LAPD Investigation

Despite the brutal nature of the crime and the presence of a bite mark, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) quickly dismissed the case as a "home invasion gone wrong." The investigators failed to pursue critical leads, including the suspicious behavior of John's ex-girlfriend, Stephanie Lazarus, an LAPD officer. Sherry’s parents, Nels and Loretta, repeatedly urged the police to investigate Lazarus, citing multiple instances where she had harassed and intimidated Sherry. Instead of listening, investigators dismissed Nels, telling him he "watched too many cop shows" and intimidated the grieving family.

The "Blue Wall of Silence"

As investigative records later suggested, the case was not just neglected; it was actively covered up. Documents pertaining to Lazarus and initial interviews where she was mentioned went missing from the official files. It appears that the department’s desire to protect one of their own—a fellow officer—took precedence over justice for a murder victim. The case went cold for 22 years, with evidence, including the crucial bite mark swab, sitting in a coroner's freezer for nearly two decades.

The Breakthrough: Detective "Bubb" and the Costco Evidence

In 2009, Detective Rob Bubb took over the cold case. He discovered the mishandled evidence and, realizing the bite mark contained female DNA, turned his attention back to Stephanie Lazarus. By this time, Lazarus had risen to the rank of detective within the LAPD, working in art theft and community policing.

To avoid alerting Lazarus or triggering a department-wide cover-up, Bubb and a small team conducted a secret, off-the-clock investigation. They eventually found a record showing that Lazarus had reported her service weapon stolen shortly after the murder—the same .38 caliber weapon used to kill Sherry. In a brilliant undercover move, they tracked Lazarus to a Costco, where they retrieved a discarded straw and cup she had used for a drink sample. The DNA from the sample was a match for the bite mark on Sherry’s arm.

Justice Served

Stephanie Lazarus was arrested in June 2009. During her interrogation, her story shifted repeatedly as she tried to distance herself from Sherry. In 2012, she was found guilty of first-degree murder. The trial revealed that Lazarus, unable to move on from her past relationship with John, had stalked and eventually murdered Sherry out of obsessive jealousy.

The jury sentenced Lazarus to 27 years to life. While the Rasmussen family was unable to successfully sue the LAPD for their role in the cover-up, the conviction finally brought closure to a case that had been defined by police negligence and personal obsession. Sherry Rasmussen, a woman who aimed to "elevate the stature of nursing," was finally granted the justice that had been denied to her for over two decades.
