The Greenbrier Ghost: Justice from Beyond the Grave

In the annals of American crime, few cases are as chilling or as historically unique as that of Elva Zona Heaster, commonly known as "Zona." Her story, set in late 19th-century West Virginia, transcends the typical accounts of domestic tragedy, marking the only known instance in U.S. history where testimony from a ghost was officially entered into a court record.

A Doomed Romance

Zona, described by her family as a "sweet" and kind-hearted woman, found herself in a tumultuous relationship with a newcomer to the area, Edward "Trout" Shue. Despite her mother Mary Jane Robinson Heaster’s immediate intuitive dislike of Trout—whom she famously labeled an "egomaniac"—Zona married him in 1896. Little did she know, Trout was a man with a dark history, having already been married twice before. His first wife, Allie, had been abandoned with their infant daughter, and his second wife, Lucy, had died under highly suspicious circumstances involving a "brick" hitting her head, a death Trout reportedly showed no remorse for, claiming he planned to have "seven wives" in his lifetime.

The Suspicious Death

In January 1897, only three months into their marriage, Zona was found dead in their home by a young neighbor, Andy Jones. When the local coroner, Dr. George Knapp, arrived, he found that Trout had already washed the body and dressed her in a high-collared gown with a heavy veil. Troublingly, Trout exhibited bizarre, controlling behavior, refusing to let the physician examine the body or touch her neck. Consequently, her cause of death was initially recorded as "everlasting faint" (likely heart failure), a diagnosis made without a proper examination.

The Spectral Revelation

Following the funeral, Zona’s mother, Mary, began experiencing a series of vivid, waking nightmares. She claimed that Zona’s spirit appeared to her over four consecutive nights, revealing that Trout had murdered her in a "fucking rage" after she failed to cook meat for supper. Zona’s ghost provided graphic details: she described her neck being "squeezed off at the first joint," the location of hidden bloodied clothing, and the precise spot in the house where the violence occurred.

Driven by these visions, Mary approached the local prosecutor, John A. Preston. Despite the supernatural nature of the claims, the authorities were already suspicious of Trout’s erratic behavior. An exhumation was ordered, and an autopsy was performed on school tables at the local Nickel Schoolhouse. The findings were devastating: Zona’s neck was broken between the first and second vertebrae, her windpipe was "mashed," and finger marks were visible on her throat. The spectral account provided by Mary Heaster was confirmed by physical evidence.

A Landmark Verdict

During the subsequent trial, the defense attempted to discredit Mary Heaster by framing her visions as mere dreams. However, she stood firm, refusing to lie, and her testimony was admitted into evidence. The jury, unswayed by the defense's attempt to paint Trout as innocent, found him guilty of first-degree murder in just over an hour.

Though Trout was sentenced to life in prison, the community’s outrage was palpable, with a mob nearly forming to exact vigilante justice. Trout died in prison in 1900, never visited by his family, leaving behind a legacy of brutality and a bizarre drawing of himself and Zona in coffins. Today, a plaque near Zona's grave serves as a permanent testament to this strange case, commemorating the young woman who, according to the official account, reached back from the afterlife to ensure her murderer faced justice.
