Welcome to a new episode of English Vocabulary Booster.
My name is Lara and I'm a SALSA-certified English teacher.
Learning new vocabulary usually takes a long time, but we'll do it in a way that's easy, quick and efficient.
In every episode, we'll learn how to use five new English words or expressions, so that you too can start speaking like a native.
So let's get learning!
Hello, guys.
Thanks for joining me again.
Are you already following me on social media?
And also, are you checking out the transcripts of the stories?
Because it really helps you memorize the words if you see them.
Okay?
This week's topic is sleep and listen to this story.
I often have trouble sleeping, but last night was even worse than usual.
I kept thinking about the conference, my boss was sending me to the following day and I didn't sleep a wink.
I was tossing and turning all night, but nothing.
When I got there, I got a message from my boss saying he couldn't come and asking me to please take some notes for him.
The conference started and I swear I was trying to pay attention, but I was just too tired so I kept dozing off.
At one point, I had an idea.
I could record the conference on my phone and then listen to it later.
I pressed the record button and I finally fell asleep.
I woke up two hours later when the conference ended.
It was probably all the clapping that woke me up.
Anyway, I played the recording to make sure it recorded fine.
And check this out.
That's right.
It's me.
You can only hear me snoring the whole time.
My boss is going to kill me.
Oh, I wouldn't want to be in the place of this guy.
Expression number one, have trouble sleeping.
I often have trouble sleeping.
If you have trouble sleeping, what parts of sleeping do you normally have problems with?
Is it falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up?
If you have trouble sleeping, that means that maybe you cannot fall asleep or you cannot stay asleep, meaning you wake up in the middle of the night a lot.
And do you have trouble sleeping?
Lately, it's been awful.
Again, I don't know what's happening, but a lot of times I can't fall asleep right away.
I wake up multiple times in the night and then I can never fall back asleep right away.
And so I end up waking up in the morning feeling super, super tired.
I hope this changes.
I got to think of something.
Expression number two, not sleep a wink.
I didn't sleep a wink.
If you haven't slept a wink, did you sleep?
Well, no.
If you haven't slept a wink, that means that you haven't slept at all, zero, nada, nothing.
Can you remember a time when you didn't sleep a wink, and why yes?
So the last time i didn't sleep a wink was last year because um, my boyfriend had come over to my place and the plan for that night was to paint a painting.
I'm sure you were thinking of something else there, but no plans to paint a painting, and we had to follow the instructions in this video And we just started.
I think we started at nine or 10 o'clock and then we couldn't stop because we kept.
We didn't want to finish it on the following day.
So we kept painting and painting.
And I think by the time we finished, it was five in the morning.
It was crazy.
Expression number three, toss and turn.
I was tossing and turning all night.
If you toss and turn in bed, do you move a lot or not?
Yes.
The expression tossing and turning is especially used when you're in bed and you're moving a lot.
You know, when you change sides, so you are on one side, maybe on your phone, and then you get tired, and so you change sides again.
And so why would you toss and turn in bed?
Usually you say, I was tossing and turning because you couldn't sleep.
You wanted to, but you couldn't.
So you keep changing positions, hoping that that's going to help you fall asleep.
Do you often find yourself tossing and turning because you can't fall asleep?
Yes, I've mentioned it before, but if I do wake up in the middle of the night, I just spend two hours tossing and turning trying to fall asleep.
And it's no fun.
It really isn't.
Expression number four, doze off.
I was just too tired, so I kept dozing off.
If you doze off, do you fall into a deep sleep or a light sleep?
If you're talking about dozing off, you're talking about a light sleep.
And now, is dozing off intentional or unintentional?
If you doze off, you don't want to.
It just happens because your body makes you do that.
Your body makes you fall asleep, but you don't want to.
Why would you doze off then?
Well, maybe something is really boring.
Like in the story, you're at a conference, you're not very interested and you're tired and your body just shuts down and you doze off.
Or maybe something's interesting, but you're just really, really tired, and you doze off.
Have you ever dozed off when it wasn't appropriate?
Pretty much every time I go to the movies, I think.
We've talked about this before, about me falling asleep while watching a movie at night at home.
Well, the problem is exactly the same when I'm at the movies because, again, comfortable.
It's all dark around me.
And maybe the movie is not super interesting and I'll doze off.
Not really fall asleep, but like for only for a second.
You know when you close your eyes and then you wake up again.
That's dozing off.
Expression number five, snore.
You can only hear me snoring the whole time.
When do you snore?
Before or while you're asleep?
You snore, that'd be funny if it was before.
No, it's while you are asleep.
And what sound do you make if you snore?
Hmm, I think there's a lot of different sounds that you can make while snoring.
It depends on the person.
Everybody's got their own style.
But the most, the classic one is the classic Why do people snore?
I think it's because they have difficulty breathing, pretty sure.
That's why you can buy those little strips that you can put on your nose and they're supposed to help you with your breathing so you don't snore.
And do you snore or do you live with someone who snores?
So...
Like I said before, quite a few people have told me that I talk in my sleep, but nobody so far has told me that I snore.
So I don't think I do.
Although that might change in the future.
Sometimes it's something that you start doing as you get older.
Um, I don't live with someone like my boyfriend.
Doesn't really snore except occasionally and very, very briefly.
And if he does, I'll just like push him just a little bit.
Not too hard.
We'll just push him a little bit, make him change position and he will stop.
And that is it for today.
