📋 Summary

The Formation of a 'Diet Cult'

The podcast delves into the disturbing history of a 1991 case involving a group of carnival workers who formed a self-proclaimed Satanic cult. The hosts, Elena and Ash, describe the group as a "diet cult"—a collection of individuals who were not truly cult-like in a traditional sense but were "cult-heavy" enough to inflict immense damage. The group, which included Jimmy Lee Pennick, Mark Goodwin, and brothers Keith and David Lawrence, claimed to follow Anton LaVey’s Satanic Bible, though the hosts suggest they were simply "assholes" seeking power and authority rather than genuine adherents to a belief system.

The Dark Ambitions of Mark Goodwin

Mark Goodwin, the de facto leader, had been obsessed with the occult since age 12. At 15, he formed a group called "Satan's Disciples." The hosts ridicule the name as "so on the nose" and "stupid." The group engaged in ritualistic animal sacrifice and bizarre practices, such as drinking cat blood to "summon demons." Goodwin, who demanded female members be naked or wear lingerie, sought to gain power through these rituals. Despite his claims of being a high priest, his actions were driven by a desire to dominate others and a misunderstanding of Satanism, which the hosts emphasize has been unfairly demonized by popular culture and "Satanic panic" narratives.

The Tragedy of William 'Tony' Ault

William "Tony" Ault, a 21-year-old, became the tragic victim of this group. Tony was described as a "good-hearted person" who was simply looking for a group of friends. He approached the cult, hoping to join, but was initially rejected. Desperate for connection, Tony leveraged secret knowledge he possessed: he knew that Pennick and Keith Lawrence had previously murdered Andrew Lee Wright in Ohio. Tony mistakenly believed this blackmail would earn him entry into the group. Instead, the cult members invited him to a secluded farm under the guise of an initiation ritual.

The Heinous Act and Its Aftermath

On September 25, 1991, the group lured Tony to a farm. After tying him to a makeshift altar, they began a brutal torture session. Pennick sliced Tony open from neck to groin, and the others carved inverted crosses into his body. While Tony was still conscious, Pennick asked if he was "ready to die" before slitting his throat. Following the murder, they dismembered the body—even removing the head so Keith Lawrence could give the skull to a friend—and burned the remains. In a chilling display of sociopathy, the group then went to an Arby's, using money stolen from Tony's pockets to buy food.

Justice and Lack of Remorse

In December 1991, Keith Goodwin’s father alerted the police, leading to the group's arrest. During the trial, the lack of remorse shown by the perpetrators was staggering. Jimmy Lee Pennick received 60 years for the murder, while others received shorter, controversial sentences. Goodwin, in a final display of his flippant nature, apologized to Tony’s mother while simultaneously remarking that Tony "didn't make it" because he was a Satanist, completely ignoring the fact that he and his cohorts were the ones who had murdered him. The hosts conclude by highlighting the devastating, "gut-wrenching" nature of the case, emphasizing that these men treated human lives like "possessions" rather than people with families who loved them.
