📋 Summary

The Tragic Manipulation of Cinnamon Brown

The case of Cinnamon Brown, famously detailed in Ann Rule’s book If You Really Loved Me, serves as a harrowing example of psychological grooming and domestic manipulation. At the heart of this tragedy is David Brown, a computer entrepreneur who orchestrated a cold-blooded plot to murder his fifth wife, Linda Brown, by weaponizing his own daughter and his young sister-in-law.

The Web of Grooming and Control

David Brown was a man who exerted total control over the women in his life. He began a relationship with Linda when she was only 13 years old, eventually marrying her. When Linda’s younger sister, Patty, moved into their home to escape a troubled environment, David systematically groomed her, engaging in a physical relationship with the child and convincing her that he was a "god" figure. His influence over Cinnamon, his 14-year-old daughter, was equally insidious. He painted a picture of Linda as a "disagreeable" and "troubled" person, isolating Cinnamon in a trailer on the property and convincing her that Linda was part of a mob conspiracy plotting to kill him.

The Orchestrated Murder

David’s manipulation culminated on March 18, 1985. He convinced both Cinnamon and Patty that Linda needed to die to protect him. David provided the weapon and orchestrated a complex alibi for himself, involving a late-night run for Dr. Pepper, apple pie, and comic books. While David was out, Cinnamon shot Linda. In a final act of cruelty, David had provided a lethal mixture of prescription drugs for Cinnamon to take, intending for her to commit a "murder-suicide" so he could eliminate the witnesses and run away with Patty.

The Investigation and Betrayal

When police discovered Cinnamon, she was found in a doghouse, covered in her own vomit and urine, clutching a note that read: "Dear God, please forgive me. I didn't mean to hurt her." Initially, Cinnamon took the fall, believing her father's lies that she would simply be sent to a psychiatrist and return home. However, the truth emerged through the resilience of investigators, who were baffled by the family's strange behavior. David’s true colors were revealed when he was caught on wiretaps trying to organize hits on the lead investigator and even Patty, once she began to cooperate with the law.

Resolution and Aftermath

Ultimately, David Brown was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, with the judge comparing his predatory behavior to that of Charles Manson. Cinnamon and Patty, both victims of profound grooming, were eventually released. Cinnamon has since moved on to live a quiet life, and remarkably, Linda’s daughter, Crystal, has expressed forgiveness, acknowledging that the girls were brainwashed by a dangerous man. David Brown died in prison in 2014, leaving behind a legacy of destruction and a chilling reminder of how easily a sociopath can dismantle the lives of those closest to him.
