Junyoshi emphasizes that their system does not rely on general-purpose AI, but rather a highly optimized stack. "We were able to optimize parts of this network... and fine-tune them to the specific application," he explains. This allows the robots to identify labels, boxes, and racks with high precision, effectively "automating the humans" by scanning existing barcodes while navigating autonomously.

Solving the Indoor Navigation Challenge

Operating indoors presents unique difficulties, primarily the lack of GPS. IFM addresses this through a proprietary SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) pipeline using computer vision. Unlike outdoor drones, these robots are designed for "centimeter accurate data" and must navigate safely in environments where people are working. Junyoshi notes that while ground-based robots operate in 2D, flying robots occupy 3D space, making safety guarantees "exponentially harder." To mitigate this, IFM has built their hardware from the ground up, removing unnecessary features to focus on high-performance flight, durability, and safety.

Future Implications for Autonomous Systems

Looking ahead, Junyoshi views inventory counting as just the beginning. The ultimate goal for IFM is to "automate all data capture indoors." By enabling devices—whether they are AR glasses, smart meters, or autonomous robots—to understand their environment, IFM is building the foundational "perception and localization pipeline" necessary for the future of industrial autonomy. As Junyoshi concludes, the value lies not just in the vehicle itself, but in the intelligent software that allows any camera-equipped device to know "where they are and what they see." By solving the toughest challenges of indoor navigation, IFM is positioning itself as a vital provider of environmental intelligence for the next generation of industrial connected devices.
