The scale is staggering: in 2023, Google’s data centers alone consumed nearly 6.4 billion gallons of potable water, an amount comparable to irrigating 43 golf courses.

The Lack of Transparency and Accountability

A central issue highlighted in the podcast is the lack of standardized reporting. Because there is no "legal framework in place" for data center water usage, companies often treat their environmental data as "trade secrets." For instance, in The Dalles, Oregon, residents saw their well water levels drop by 15 feet after a Google data center was built; it was only after a year-long legal battle that it was revealed the facility was using a quarter of the town's available water. Furthermore, companies like Amazon do not disclose total water consumption, reporting only a "water usage effectiveness" (WUE) metric, which obscures the actual environmental impact.

Questionable Climate Pledges

Major tech operators have pledged to become "water positive" and reach "net zero carbon emissions" by 2030 or 2040. However, experts remain skeptical. Sasha Luccione of Hugging Face notes that these are "nonbinding pledges" used to gain positive attention. Benjamin Lee echoes this doubt, stating that as companies increase energy use faster than they transition to renewables, he does not see how they can "possibly achieve those net-zero goals." The recent push toward massive AI infrastructure projects, such as the proposed "Stargate" project which would consume 15 gigawatts of power, suggests that the environmental toll will likely continue to grow. As Jesse Dodge of the Allen Institute for AI suggests, when these companies inevitably fail to meet their goals, they may simply "move the goalpost," leaving the public to grapple with the long-term ecological consequences of the AI boom.
