Hey English learners, welcome to another phrasal verb episode.
I hope you're doing well and I hope you're ready to learn some new phrasal verbs today.
In today's episode, we're going to look at two phrasal verbs.
The first one is bring about and the other one is bring out.
So, first let's look at the definition of these phrasal verbs and hear an example of each one.
So, bring about means to cause something to happen.
So, for example, I could say the invention of the internet has brought about huge changes.
So what I'm saying here is that the invention of the internet caused huge changes to happen.
It is still causing huge changes.
So we often use this phrasal verb when talking about how some invention, some big change, some new thing causes something else to happen or something else to change or whatever.
So that's bring about.
And how about bring?
This means to make something more apparent or evident.
For example, I could say, that dress really brings out the color of your eyes.
What I'm saying here is that the girl's dress makes her eye color stand out more.
It's more apparent or obvious.
I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.
If you see a girl with blue eyes and she wears a certain color dress, this might make her eyes look even more blue.
It really brings out the color of her eyes.
So that could be for a physical trait, for a personality trait, or other things as well.
So that is bring out.
So now I'm going to talk about a couple different things, and I'm going to use these two phrasal verbs again and again.
And hopefully, by the end of this episode, you'll be able to really understand the meaning of these phrasal verbs, the context in which they might be used, and you might even be able to use them in your own sentences.
So first, Let me talk about new leaders and the effect that they can have.
So there are many different types of leaders.
Let's take the example of presidents or kings or prime ministers, the head of a country.
So when there is a new president or a new king or a new head of a nation, they can bring about a lot of change.
And we all know this.
From one presidency to the next or one regime to the next, meaning like one person's rule from one to the next, there can be big changes, right.
A new leader of a country can bring about a big shift in the trajectory of the country, meaning the direction in which the country is going.
So perhaps the election of a certain president brings about a shift in the goals of the country, so that now the country has different goals than it did under the previous president.
Maybe the ideology is different.
The philosophy is different.
So that election, the result of that election, brought about a big shift in the trajectory of the country, because now the country is going to pursue different goals from what it was previously pursuing.
So that happens a lot.
And another thing that can happen is that the election of a new prime minister or president or a new king taking control.
This can bring about a big change in the mindset of the whole country or the views that common people have.
Rulers of countries are powerful. and have powerful opinions and influence.
And not only that, but sometimes the people really dislike a certain ruler or, more commonly, half the country dislikes a certain president.
And because of that They shift their mindset to pretty much oppose everything that that ruler puts forth or everything that that ruler says or believes.
I'm sure you have known people like this, or maybe you've even done this before, where a president that you don't like says something and because it's that president who says it, you decide to think the opposite, to have the opposite opinion, even if you haven't really researched the topic.
We all have that instinct, maybe we mistrust everything that someone says if we really dislike them.
And because of that, when a new leader comes into power, this person might not only bring about a change in the country's mindset because of their influence, but also because many people might develop opinions that go against that leader.
Like everyone starts to think something because the leader thinks the opposite.
So a big change in mindset happens can be brought about by a new president or leader of a country.
And of course there are many negative things that can happen when there is a change in the leader of a country.
It can bring about uncertainty.
This is maybe one of the biggest things.
People don't know what's going to happen, what this person is going to do, what they're going to implement.
So it brings about uncertainty when a new president gets elected.
Sometimes it can bring about chaos.
It can actually make the country a more chaotic place and people fight each other.
And even physically, there might be riots in the street based on who gets elected.
And in really extreme cases it can even bring about a revolution in the country.
That Maybe not immediately, but somewhere down the line, as we say, like somewhere sometime in the future, that election or the new person who took power, that event ends up causing a revolution at some point.
So a lot of uncertainty and chaos can be caused when there is a new leader.
New leaders can bring about a lot of change and uncertainty and even chaos.
And even if we talk about leaders on a smaller scale, like the boss or manager or leader in some company, this can bring about a lot of change in leadership, the work culture, in the work environment, and all of that when there's a new leader.
So you might have experienced this before, where you get a new boss, your old boss leaves and And the new boss comes in and starts changing things.
So this change in leadership brings about a lot of shifts, a lot of alterations, a lot of different things when it comes to the culture of that work environment, the office, maybe the mindset of the workers.
Maybe the previous boss was really relaxed and easygoing and then the new boss wants to tighten things up and be stricter than the other boss, and maybe That, of course, causes things to feel different in the workplace.
It brings about a big change in the work culture.
Maybe now you can't be as social with other people or as friendly.
You have to focus more on your tasks.
And a change in leadership in a company can also bring about lot of uncertainty because people might think that the new boss might fire them, and it can bring about a lot of anxiety like what's gonna happen?
Is My career path still pretty much the same?
Am I still in line for that promotion?
Am I going to be favored by the new boss or not?
It brings about anxiety. and a lot of uncertainty.
And, of course, if the new leader is good, if they're a better boss, then the success can be the result.
It can bring about a lot of success for the company.
Maybe that new leader is able to achieve much better results.
So That can be a good thing.
So all of those things can happen when a new leader comes into power.
And the other thing that I wanted to talk about today is more personal.
I'll talk about when my different qualities are most apparent.
Specifically, I'm going to talk about a few different qualities.
First, my creativity.
What brings out my creativity?
What makes my creativity shine, I'll say?
Well, one thing is writing.
I've always liked writing.
I've always been a pretty good writer.
It comes naturally to me.
And so, for example, if I write creatively, like if I write a song, which I sometimes do, I sometimes write hymns, like spiritual songs.
When I do this, This brings out my creativity.
I suddenly get into this really creative mindset.
And of course, I have to think differently than when I'm just thinking logically about something.
So that really brings out my creativity.
In the past, I used to write some short stories or I even tried to write novels in the past.
And of course, that really brought out my creative side.
And I remember having poetry class in college and that definitely brought out my creativity.
Poetry is an extremely creative activity.
And so that is one of the times when I was most creative, when I had to write poems.
So that really brought out my creativity in the past.
And one other thing that brings out my creativity is when I play with my son and my daughter as well, but my son is a little older, so we can play a wider variety of games.
And when I play with him we play make-believe, as we say, meaning we pretend that things are happening when they really aren't.
So we might say, let's pretend that this dinosaur right here wants to eat that dinosaur.
Something like that.
And when we play like this, I really have to be careful. creative and imaginative.
So this really brings out my creative side.
When I play with my son, I have to be more like a kid and think more like my son thinks in order to successfully play with him and have fun with him.
So it's really cool.
I like that that brings out my creativity.
And how about my humor?
What brings out my humor, my sense of humor, or my funny side?
What brings out my funny side?
Well, usually when I'm in conversations in groups of three or four, this is usually when I can perform my best, I'll say, in terms of conversation and being funny.
In larger groups, I don't really do really well.
And sometimes one-on-one, I'm not quite as good at being funny or whatever.
But when I'm with two other people or three other people, I can usually find...
A lot of opportunity, many opportunities to be funny in the conversation.
And especially when the other people are witty, meaning they're funny funny in a very quick, intelligent way.
They're able to say things really fast and respond and in a funny way to things that other people say.
And when I'm with those types of people, it brings out my wittiness, my humor.
So I do well in those situations.
Oftentimes when I'm eating a meal with other people, I feel relaxed and I can be funny.
That can bring out my humor.
And when I'm poking fun at myself, meaning I'm making fun of myself Not in a really negative way, but just in a lighthearted way that can bring out my humor as well.
I think that I can be funny when I poke fun at myself.
And lastly, how about my nerdiness, I'll call it?
What brings out my nerdy side?
Well, as many of you probably know, talking about languages brings out my nerdy side.
So it brings out the nerd in me.
When I talk about learning languages, and not just learning foreign languages, but also linguistics in general, even just talking about English and the linguistics of English and pronunciation.
I can get really passionate and interested in conversations regarding pronunciation, specifically English pronunciation.
If I start talking about this, I get very nerdy and technical and I get really interested in this.
So that's something that brings out my nerdiness.
And then, besides talking about languages, talking about culture and geography can also bring out my nerdiness.
I've had the opportunity to teach people from many, many, many countries all around the world.
So I'm pretty knowledgeable of culture and geography compared to the average person.
So I'm kind of like a nerd in this sense.
If I talk to my friends about different countries geography culture, I might sound a little bit nerdy.
This might bring out my nerdiness.
And one more thing in the past I used to be really interested in economics, and talking about this topic would bring out my nerdy side.
So not quite as much anymore, but still a little bit.
I actually experienced this recently, to be honest.
So it still is something that brings out my nerdiness a little bit, but more so in the past.
Okay, I hope that, as I was talking, you were able to understand these phrasal verbs and the meaning of them, and hopefully you can use them in your own sentences now.
