My Encounters with Wild Animals: Tales from the Suburbs and Beyond

In this episode of the Listening Time Podcast, host Connor explores his personal experiences with various wild animals. Although he notes that he has "always lived in the suburbs and the city," and thus lacks extensive experience in the wilderness, he recounts five distinct encounters that range from frightening to fascinating. These stories provide a vivid look at how nature can intersect with suburban life.

The Rattlesnake Incident

One of the most harrowing experiences occurred when Connor was 18. During a family "get together" in their backyard, he noticed a strange "buzzing sound" coming from a "slope" (an incline or hill) behind the house. He soon discovered his dog whimpering and confused, suffering from a bite by a rattlesnake. Connor explains that in his hometown of San Diego, residents must remain "aware" (conscious) of these snakes, especially during summer. The family had to rush the dog to an animal hospital, where he was treated with "antivenom" after his face began to "swell up" due to the reaction to the venom.

A Nighttime Encounter with Coyotes

Connor describes a scary experience from his youth when he and a friend decided to take a "shortcut" through the hills behind his house after sunset. As darkness fell, they realized they were surrounded by a "pack of coyotes." He explains that a pack refers to a group of animals like wolves or coyotes. Equipped with skateboards they were ready to use as weapons, they fortunately managed to escape without needing to fight. This incident served as a stern lesson about the dangers of navigating nature in the dark.

The Hawk and the Chihuahua

In a story reflecting the food chain in a suburban setting, Connor shares an incident involving his neighbor’s small dog—a chihuahua—and a predatory bird. While playing in the yard, Connor noticed a hawk circling lower than usual. Suddenly, the bird descended with its "talons" (sharp, nail-like feet) outstretched, attempting to grab the small dog. Connor and his neighbor were able to scare the bird away by waving their arms and making noise. This encounter highlighted how small pets can be viewed as "prey" by birds of prey, requiring owners to be more vigilant.

Swimming with Whale Sharks

Unlike the accidental encounters, this experience was intentional. Connor traveled to La Paz, Mexico, to swim with whale sharks. He describes these creatures as "gigantic" and the "biggest fish in the world." He had the opportunity to swim alongside "juvenile" (young and still growing) whale sharks, capturing the adventure on a GoPro. For him, this was a rare, awe-inspiring experience of being close to such a massive animal in its natural habitat.

The Pool-Dwelling Ducks

Finally, Connor shares a lighter, yet frustrating story about two ducks that decided to make his family’s pool their home. While initially humorous, the situation became problematic as the ducks were "dirtying up" the pool, making it unusable for humans. To solve the problem, the family used "fishing line" (the string used on a fishing pole) to create a barrier across the water. This "spider web" of line effectively deterred the ducks, eventually forcing them to leave the pool permanently.

Conclusion

Through these stories, Connor illustrates that even those living in suburban environments can have significant interactions with wildlife. Whether it is a dangerous snake, a predatory hawk, or persistent ducks, these encounters serve as reminders of the importance of being aware of one's surroundings and respecting the natural instincts of wild animals.
