📋 Summary

The Perils of Apartment Living in Mexico

In this episode, Connor shares two harrowing personal experiences from his time living in Mexico, reflecting on the unpredictability of housing and the importance of family safety. Through these stories, he illustrates how life-altering events can reshape one's perspective on home and security.

The Guadalajara Terrace Collapse

While living in Guadalajara, Connor and his wife resided in a third-floor apartment that featured a unique, private terrace. They cherished this space, often using it for breakfast or coffee. Before moving to Tijuana to be closer to his parents, their landlord warned them of a nearby construction project. Though they moved away before the work began, the consequences were devastating.

Upon returning to visit months later, they were shocked to discover that the construction crew had caused a catastrophic failure, leading to the "terrace completely collapsed to the ground" and severe damage to their former neighbor’s bedroom. Connor describes feeling "stunned" and deeply grateful, noting that had they still been living there with their newborn son, the outcome could have been tragic. The incident forced other residents to "evacuate" immediately, leaving behind their belongings for months—a situation that highlights the chaotic and often uncontrollable nature of urban living.

The Tijuana Break-in Attempt

Transitioning to Tijuana was a difficult sacrifice for Connor’s family, as his wife was "not thrilled" about the move. The apartment they occupied was old and in a "prime location," but the living situation turned dangerous one morning. At 6:30 a.m., while his family was asleep, Connor heard someone outside their door who sounded "frantic" and began attempting to force the door open.

Connor recounts being completely "stunned" and unprepared, lacking any weapon to defend his family. The intruder tried to gain entry multiple times, knowing the residents were home, which particularly alarmed Connor, as he felt the person’s "intentions were different" than a simple robbery. Although the intruder eventually fled, the experience was the "last straw," prompting the family to return to Guadalajara.

Hindsight and Gratitude

Reflecting on these events, Connor offers a poignant observation on how life’s hardships can sometimes provide hidden protection. While the period in Tijuana was filled with stress and the fear of a break-in, he realizes that it was this very move that kept them away from their Guadalajara apartment when the terrace collapsed. In "hindsight," he expresses profound relief that his family was safe, emphasizing that their survival and well-being remain his ultimate priority. This narrative serves as a reminder of how quickly circumstances can change and the importance of looking out for one's family above all else.
