📋 Summary

Reflecting on 2021: A Year of Growth and Transformation

As the year 2021 concludes, Connor, the host of the Listening Time podcast, takes a moment to "reflect"—a process he defines as thinking deeply and analyzing one's experiences—on the significant professional and personal changes that defined his year.

Professional Evolution and the Vision for Listening

A major theme of Connor’s year was shifting his professional focus. He admits that when he first created the brand Polyglossa, his "vision" (his idea for the future) was to build a multi-language school. However, he realized that his audience responded most enthusiastically to his listening practice content. Consequently, he decided to "fill this gap" in the market, noting that while there is an abundance of grammar and vocabulary resources online, few teachers focus on the nuances of English sounds and listening comprehension.

He has transitioned away from the Polyglossa website to focus exclusively on Listening Time. He highlights this as a strategic move to "sustain" his business—a term he uses to mean maintaining and supporting his work long-term. By utilizing Patreon, he provides a more accessible model where members retain access to content, rather than the previous system where seminars would disappear after 24 hours. He also introduced a new "family member" tier, which includes "sound training videos" designed to help students identify specific patterns, such as the natural reduction of "what did you" to "what'd you."

Personal Milestones: Challenges and Joy

Connor’s personal life underwent profound changes as well. He moved to a new city, an experience he describes as a difficult transition, using the phrase "that's life" to acknowledge the necessity of accepting life's hardships.

However, the most significant highlight was the birth of his first child. Connor candidly shares that while fatherhood involves sacrifices, sleepless nights, and hard work, all of these challenges "pale in comparison" to the joy of being a parent. He emphasizes that the positives of his new life "outweigh" the negatives, affirming that his son’s development is the most exciting aspect of his current life.

Future Aspirations: Health and Language Learning

Looking toward 2022, Connor addresses his physical and intellectual goals. He admits to feeling "out of shape" due to a lack of exercise following his son's birth. To remedy this, he plans to "take up" tennis again—a hobby he enjoyed as a child—to ensure he gets more outdoor activity.

Regarding language learning, Connor expresses a desire for more structure. While he focused on French in 2021, he admits he was not as organized as he would have liked. His plan for the coming year is to prioritize listening until he can comprehend native-level conversations. Once he achieves this, he intends to "revisit" Greek, a language he finds "fascinating" but technically challenging. Through these reflections, Connor sets a clear path for personal improvement, aiming to balance his professional ambition as the premier source for English listening content with his commitment to his growing family and personal well-being.

I hope you all had a good Christmas.
Actually, at the time of recording this, it's not Christmas yet.
I'm recording this the week of Christmas, but this episode will be released after Christmas, so I hope you all had a good Christmas and that you're having a good end of the year and that you're thinking of all the plans and things that you want to do in 2022.
Since this is the last podcast episode before the end of the year, I wanted to dedicate this episode to talking a little bit about my year, about my 2021, so I can kind of give all of you guys a review of what I did in 2021 and the things that I did well or the things that I didn't do well, to just reflect on this year.
