Well, hello and welcome to this English lesson about noun phrases.
If you're wondering what a noun phrase is, it's a noun with some other words that can act as a whole noun, and here are some examples right off the top so you know what I'm talking about.
You could say that I am in a good state of mind.
You could say that that was a piece of cake meaning easy.
You could say that there was a strange turn of events, could say something like that's a waste of time or that's a waste of money.
All of those phrases that I just used are considered noun phrases, and I have about 26 or 27 of them in the lesson today.
So once again welcome to this English lesson about noun phrases.
I think it will be a good one.
These are all super common English phrases.
English noun phrases that we use almost every day.
So I bet you, if I kept track, I would use all of these within a week, as I had conversations with other English speakers.
So, welcome to this English lesson about noun phrases. waste of time.
So a waste of time is something useless and unproductive.
And I put I put a picture of school here, not because I think school is a waste of time.
But sometimes students think school is a waste of time.
In fact, some students in North America are starting to think university is a waste of time.
You wanted a good job.
In North America, we actually have too many people who have gone to university and not enough people who have gone to a trade school or learned how to do something that helps the world, like laying bricks or plumbing where you put pipes in houses.
So we're starting to realize that if you go into the world of work can end up making more money than if you go to university sometimes.
So a waste of time is something useless and unproductive.
My grandparents thought that exercise was a waste of time.
They didn't understand why people would want to run around or lift weights, because I think they did a lot of manual labor and so they thought it was a waste of time.
So again, the word waste in English I means to not use something well, and a waste of time is something useless and unproductive.
Then there's a waste of money.
A very similar phrase but obviously we're talking about money in this case.
Sometimes I know people who go out to eat almost every night of the week.
They go to a restaurant almost every night and I personally think that's a waste of money.
I think going out to eat once a week, once a month is more reasonable, but if you are, let me give you another example.
There are some students who buy a cup of coffee and they buy breakfast at Tim Hortons on their way to school, which is Tim Hortons is a little cafe and I think that is a waste of money.
You should just make breakfast at home and eat it at home. pain in the neck.
Something or someone very annoying.
So this is a speed camera, and yesterday in Ontario Canada, the government said that they might ban speed cameras and red light cameras because people think they're a pain in the neck.
When something's a pain in the neck, it's very, very annoying.
What people don't like about speed cameras in my province is that you don't get the ticket until four or five weeks later.
So some people didn't realize there was a speed camera and they got multiple tickets, the mail, all at once.
So and you someone could also be like a person can be a pain in the neck as well.
So a pain in the neck something or someone very annoying. piece of cake.
Something very easy.
I was going to say, doing these English lessons is a piece of cake for me now because I've done them for so long.
They are still a bit of work.
Um but certainly if you have a dishwasher then doing dishes is now a piece of cake.
We do not have a dishwasher.
We wash our dishes by hand.
But I think if we had a dishwasher then doing dishes would be a piece of cake.
So would be very very easy to do the dishes.
I'm jealous.
This looks like a nice way to do dishes.
You just put them all in the machine and push the button and then they are clean.
It's a piece of cake.
A matter of time.
So when you say something is a matter of time it's something certain to happen eventually.
Something that you know is going to happen.
The cost of things that we buy is always go up.
It's just a matter of time.
If you wait long enough milk will cost more in the grocery store.
If you wait long enough eggs will cost more.
It's just a matter of time.
Everything eventually gets more expensive. you don't have gray hair yet.
It's just a matter of time.
It's something I think that happens to most people.
Some people go bald as well but it's just a matter of time before your hair starts to turn gray.
So something certain that will happen eventually.
A drop in the bucket. something very small compared to the whole.
So the best example I can give would be if I owed my brother 1000 and if I gave my brother 2 to start paying off the debt, that would be a drop in the bucket.
I owe him a thousand. give him $2 to start to pay him back.
That's just a drop in the bucket.
Um I'm trying to think of another example here.
The first time that leaves fall off the trees in the fall.
That's just a drop in the bucket compared to the when the rest of the leaves fall.
So a drop in the bucket something very small compared to the hole. breath of fresh air.
Something new and refreshing.
So I tried to think of a few examples of this.
One can be when you start a new job.
Maybe this guy's starting a new job.
And it's a breath of fresh air.
Okay.
So maybe the last job was very difficult and very challenging.
And the new job is very enjoyable.
It's a breath of fresh air. work, maybe you hire someone new.
They're very happy and energetic and positive and they're fun to work with.
That might be a breath of fresh air for the place where you work.
And maybe you you a new boss and your new boss is quite friendly.
Maybe that's what's happening in this picture.
Maybe this guy is the new boss and he's really nice.
And he's very kind.
You would say oh my new my new boss is a breath of fresh air.
He makes the workplace much more enjoyable.
A stroke of luck.
Something fortunate that happens.
So I think this person is got a check in the mail, but they're certainly very happy and I would guess maybe they weren't expecting this.
So a stroke of luck is when something good happens.
Something fortunate happens.
Um and you weren't really expecting it.
Okay.
So it would be a stroke of luck.
Um let's say I can give you another example.
Um let me see here.
Like let's say I drive to school late.
Um, and it's a stroke of luck that I find a parking spot uh, because sometimes our parking lot is really, really full.
Uh, nine times out of ten I can find a parking spot.
But uh, sometimes there's something happening at the school and then it's just a stroke of luck if I find one or if you win the lottery.
That's always the simple example.
It's a stroke of luck. a waste of space.
Now, notice the definition of this one says someone or something useless.
If you call a person a waste of space, it is an insult.
It's not just informal.
It is insulting but sometimes you will hear this.
In a movie, someone might say that guy's a waste of space.
Meaning that they're useless.
Maybe they're all police officers and the new guy is not very good at his job.
You might say he's a waste of space.
It would be an insult if at work you have an old photocopier or printer that doesn't work and it's not even plugged in.
It would literally be a waste of space.
You should get rid of it and maybe you can put something else in that spot or space, or maybe you need a new one.
So a waste of space someone or something that is useless. load of nonsense.
Something silly or untrue.
Sometimes people will tell you about something that happened to them and it sounds like they're making it up.
It sounds like they're exaggerating or maybe even lying.
In that sense in that case you might think it's a load of nonsense.
But children's books are by design a load of nonsense in a good way, something silly or untrue.
But sometimes you'll hear a politician talk about things and the facts don't match what the politician is saying and then you might say to a friend it's just a load of nonsense, like everything he says, not true.
It's a load of nonsense.
So a load of nonsense, something silly or untrue, and in there we have the word nonsense, which means something that isn't true or doesn't make sense at all.
Blessing in disguise.
Something that seems bad but is actually good or is eventually good.
So the best example for this is being fired and being hired.
I don't know why fired and hired sound slightly different when they're spelled almost the same.
It might have a job.
You might get fired.
Your boss might come to you and say don't come in tomorrow.
You're fired.
Usually they're not that direct.
They'll say you're gonna be laid off.
You have two weeks, then you might be sad, but then you might get hired somewhere else at a better job.
So that would be a blessing in disguise.
Something that seems bad.
Getting fired feels awful.
I was fired once.
Getting fired feels awful.
But getting hired is the only hired isn't possible unless you've lost your previous job.
Well okay that's not 100% true.
And now you're all wondering where did Bob get fired from?
I once did tech support for an organization and they said we want to contract you for three years.
We can't afford your full rate, so we're going to pay a lower rate the first year, and then we're going to pay a bit more the second year, and then the third year we're going to pay your full rate.
And I needed the work so I said sure.
I worked there for two years and then they fired me instead of paying me by full rate.
So they kind of took advantage of me.
I'm still a little bitter about that but it was like 30 years ago.
I should stop.
A fact of life.
Something real that cannot be changed.
So here is simple fact of life.
Uh you will get old.
That is a fact of life. of us.
You will get old.
It's a fact of life.
You can't stop it.
It is something real that cannot be changed.
You have to pay taxes.
That's just a fact of life.
If you earn money you have to send a small amount of that money to the government.
You have to pay taxes.
It is a fact of life.
Um what is another fact of life?
The you get old, things start to hurt more.
That's a fact of life.
Um so, a fact of life, something real that cannot be changed, or also just something that's true about life?
Um if you want to travel, you need to spend money.
That's a fact of life.
It's very hard to travel for free. state of mind is the way someone is thinking or feeling.
So I would say the state of mind of these protesters is that they are angry about something.
They are upset about something.
They are protesting because their state of mind is that they don't want to go to work.
They don't want to be at home.
They want to be somewhere to express what they are thinking.
Cuz their state of mind is that they are angry or annoyed.
My state of mind right now is fairly calm.
I'm fairly calm when I'm doing a live stream.
Mostly because I enjoy it and also because it's Friday.
I think this is a great day to do live streams because I'm more relaxed on a Friday.
So So your state of mind right now might be you might be really intense.
You might be taking notes and trying to listen to every word.
Or your state of mind might be very relaxed.
You're just hanging out in the chat and enjoying your time here.
So a state of mind the way someone is thinking or feeling. sign of the times.
Something that shows how the world is now.
So here is a sign of the times in Canada.
This article says a silver tsunami is headed for Canada, with all baby boomers set to hit retirement age by 2030.
Now far-reaching implications for Canada's economy and labor market.
A new RBC report says.
So there's a few things to unpack there.
Tsunami is a wave caused usually by an earthquake and it's a big wave in the ocean.
But we use this to talk about other waves.
The silver tsunami is all of the old people who are retiring in Canada.
So have a whole bunch of people around a certain age and they are all starting to retire in the next 10 years.
So by 2030 in five years there's going to be a lot of retired people.
Um so that is a sign of the times.
Uh in Canada a sign of the times is that there are more and more people retiring.
A way of life.
So a way of life is how people usually live.
Um So when I was a kid we had a really nice way of life.
We were farmers.
We lived on a farm.
My parents worked in the barn that is beside the house.
Well It's a little ways from the house but it is a way of life.
Um if you are a university professor, it's a different way of life.
If you are a bricklayer, it's a different way of life.
If you work for someone, that's one way of life but you can also own a business.
So it kinda just describes almost everything about people like miss being a university student, because the way of life of a university student is quite it's simple, in my opinion.
Now,
At the time I thought it was stressful, but I miss being a university student because that way of life like you, just went and learned every day.
That was a very cool way of life.
I kind of miss it.
Um, but I don't mind.
My current way of life of doing YouTube and working out of school is fun as well.
A rule of thumb is a simple general rule.
A rule of thumb in Canada would be don't go outside when your hair is still wet in the middle of the winter.
Because your hair will freeze.
It's a rule of thumb in Canada.
Another rule of thumb is when it is winter you should keep mittens and a hat, a blanket, in your car in case you go in the ditch.
Because the roads get slippery and if you go in the ditch you are stranded and you need to stay warm.
So a rule of thumb is keep a blanket and some warm clothes in the car.
This sign this is a rule of thumb if you build anything out of wood or other materials.
Measure twice cut once.
That means if you're going to cut a piece of wood cut, you measure it and it's 14 centimeters, and then you cut it.
Between measuring it and cutting it, you might forget.
So it's good to measure it twice before you cut it.
And then the sign's a bit of a joke right?
Cuz you can see that they they didn't actually follow this rule of thumb.
And But yes, a rule of thumb is a simple general rule.
Um yeah, don't go outside like if you have a shower in Canada and it's minus 20 Celsius outside.
If you go outside with your hair damp or still a bit wet, it will freeze.
Um, I don't care when that happens, but if you have longer hair and you like to do your hair a certain way, you might want to avoid going outside with wet hair.
I hope this doesn't spur on controversy.
A matter of opinion.
Something that can't be proven either way.
So, there's a few things with Messi.
It's a matter of opinion whether he's the best soccer player that's ever played the game, or football player, if you use the word football and also might disagree with the fact that he plays for Miami.
Um but all of those things are a matter of opinion.
There's no facts to say he's the best or someone else is the best, right?
Uh it's a matter of opinion.
Um, in a sports game, if the umpire makes a call against your team, that's a matter of opinion for you if you think the call was wrong.
Um, sorry I maybe didn't explain that as good as I could, but certainly um, if you said who's the best singer in the world, that would be a matter of opinion.
All of the answers you get would be a matter of opinion.
Um, by the way, I haven't seen him play, but um I I imagine that when he plays in any North American stadium, the ticket sales go up.
That would be my um my feeling.
Maybe I should try and see a game in Toronto sometime.
Let's I'll I'll see.
I haven't seen a football game soccer game yet.
Um I should do that. work of art.
Something beautiful.
So it doesn't have to be a painting.
It doesn't have to be a drawing.
Like it doesn't have to be actual art.
It can be.
You could say oh that painting is a work of art.
But you could also describe things like this building.
You could say that building is a work of art.
It is beautiful.
The balconies are all curved and it looks like a giant sculpture.
It is a work of art.
It is very very beautiful.
So a work of art.
Something beautiful.
And it's usually something made by people wouldn't say that tree is a work of art, but you might say that park bench is a work of art, okay.
How would you describe a beautiful tree?
You wouldn't say a work of art.
Oh, you would say a thing of beauty.
Yeah, that's the phrase like that tree is a thing of beauty.
That bench is a work of art.
You can also call the bench a thing of beauty if it's really really nicely made. turn of events.
An unexpected change.
So if you're driving to work and you have an accident that's a bad turn of events.
Um you can also have good turn of events by the way.
But it's an unexpected change.
You could say I went to work today and there was a good turn of events, I got a promotion.
Or I was driving to work today and then there was a bad turn of events.
I I ended the person in front of me.
By the way when you rear end someone with a car it means you hit them from behind.
From the side you T-bone them and then from the front it's head on collision.
So you can rear end someone you can T-bone them or you can have a head on collision.
All of those would be a bad turn of events for sure.
A moment of truth. time when something important is discovered or decided.
So I have to explain this one a little bit.
This is a show called The Voice.
And there are four professional singers that sit in the chairs.
And a person will come on the stage behind them.
And someone who's not a professional singer, someone who wants to become a professional singer, and they will sing and if the four judges, if they like the person, they push a button and their chair turns around and then they can put them on their team.
I'm not going to explain the whole show.
The whole point is you went on this show to sing and none of them turned around.
That would be a moment of truth.
It would be a time when something important is discovered, and what you're probably discovering is you're not a good singer.
You went on this show and all four judges push their button and their chair turned around.
That would be a moment of truth, because you would then realize you are a really, really good singer.
So there are many times in life where you might experience a moment of truth.
Um sometimes it's it's rather revealing when you discover something about yourself.
A state of emergency.
You may have heard this one before.
It's common to hear it on the news.
Usually it is declared by someone who is in power.
So you might hear that the mayor declared a state of emergency because of the flooding.
Or the prime minister declared a state of emergency in British Columbia because of the forest fires.
So it is used to refer to a dangerous situation.
It is a formal declaration that things are so bad that people there need more help than they normally would.
If there's a house on fire in a town that is not a state of emergency.
It's just an emergency.
If a forest fire is burning and it's going to hit a town, they will declare a state of emergency and they will evacuate everyone.
So a state of emergency a dangerous situation. of lies.
This is a fun one.
Let me make this bigger so you can read the chart I found.
A pack of lies would be many lies.
Again I keep using politicians as examples.
Some politicians are awesome.
And some politicians it's just a pack of lies whenever they talk.
So many many lies would be a pack of lies.
And chart I found said how many social interactions involve a lie.
So apparently in video chat people lie more than they do via email.
But overall people lie almost 10 of the time via email text, social media, face to face phone and video chat.
And I'm sure most of those are simple lies or little white lies.
Um, like what would be a little white lie if the I texted Jen and said, do you need anything from the grocery store?
And she said no, are you getting anything?
And if I said no, and then I bought a chocolate bar I didn't tell her, that would be me telling a little lie via text.
Even sense of humor.
This is one of the most important things to have in life.
If you have a sense of humor it is the ability to laugh at things.
Even the ability to laugh at bad things but usually after you time has passed.
So obviously we don't laugh at anything in life, but sometimes you just need to have a sense of humor.
Even like if my car had a flat tire and then I ran out of gas and then I don't know something and then I banged into someone in the parking lot.
At some point you just have to laugh about that.
You wouldn't feel like laughing the day it happens, but if you have a sense of humor and week or two later you'll probably laugh about it.
But it also means the ability to crack jokes.
The ability to say funny things.
Uh, the ability to just enjoy being with other people and laughing about what's happening in the world with words.
Being good at speaking or writing or both obviously.
I did have to laugh when I when I reviewed these slides this morning.
This guy I thought he has a way with words.
And then I noticed that not a lot of people in the audience.
Like there's a lot of empty chairs.
So the example was gonna be this guy has a way with words, but maybe he doesn't have a way with words.
Maybe it's kinda boring to listen to him.
But if you have a way with words it means you're good at speaking or you're good at writing or both.
A matter of principle.
Something important to your values.
So I a matter of principle to me that I always put my garbage in the garbage can, my recycling in the recycle bin.
It's a matter of principle.
I think we should take care of the earth.
So it's important to me.
One of my values is that I clean up after myself because I want the world to be tidy.
So Um so these people I think are cleaning up a park and it's a matter of principle.
They believe that we all need to keep our parks clean, and so they, I think, are volunteering to clean up the park, and so, for them, it's a matter of principle.
Um I'm trying to think of another example.
Um it's a matter of principle.
Yeah.
Some people will drive electric vehicles because for them, they think it's better for the environment.
That could be a matter of opinion though.
By the way if we go back to another one of the down phrases but it might be a matter of principle.
They don't want to burn petrol or gasoline so they drive an electric vehicle. waste of energy.
Doing something that isn't worth the effort.
I do not think exercise is a waste of energy.
But my grandparents thought that exercise was a waste of energy.
For my grandparents living and working on a farm.
Their way of life was that they were farmers.
And you had enough energy to exercise it meant you didn't work hard enough that day on the farm.
That's what my dad and my uncles and aunts have told me.
That my grandparents thought exercise was a waste of energy.
Now this was like five 50, 60 years ago or more, right?
Probably 60 or 70 years ago.
So it was a different era.
They had a different way of life where you, if you had energy, you use that energy to do work.
So anyways, I think exercise is great.
But you might think that's a matter of opinion.
You might think it's a waste of energy, a waste of time, and maybe even a waste of money.
Who knows?
