📋 Summary

The Parable of the Three-Legged Pot

In this episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Sheer presents a classic folktale originating from Denmark and the Middle East, titled "The Three-Legged Pot." The story serves as a moral lesson on the virtue of generosity and the detrimental nature of greed and wastefulness.

The Stark Contrast in Lifestyles

The narrative centers on two brothers: Casper, a struggling man living in a "creaky cottage" with his wife Clara, and Felix, an incredibly wealthy but stingy landowner. While Casper and Clara face a harsh winter with only their scrawny cow, Clover, to sustain them, Felix lives in a "massive mansion" with "countless servants." Despite his immense fortune, Felix is depicted as pathologically extravagant, tossing away "tarnished silver coins" into the trash rather than sharing them with his family in need. This sets the stage for the central conflict: the disparity between those who have nothing and those who possess everything but refuse to give.

The Magical Intervention

Desperate to survive the winter, Casper attempts to sell Clover. On his way to the market, he encounters a mysterious stranger who offers a trade: a "black iron pot" with "three short, sturdy legs" in exchange for the cow. Initially skeptical, Casper is shocked when the pot begins to speak, claiming to be "way more valuable" than money. Driven by curiosity and the hope of a miracle, Casper completes the trade, bringing the pot home to Clara.

The Pot’s Mission of Redistribution

The pot reveals its true purpose after being cleaned and placed on the fire. It begins to "clickety-clack" to Felix’s estate, where it systematically collects the resources Felix has deemed worthless or excessive.

  1. Wheat: The pot visits the barn where farmhands, frustrated by Felix's waste, fill it with bushels of grain.
  2. Fabrics: It then infiltrates the tailor's room, where silk, cashmere, and velvet—deemed too much for the estate to store—are packed into the pot.
  3. Silver Coins: Finally, it enters the counting house. Felix, who is busy throwing away "detestable" tarnished coins, finds the pot and attempts to reclaim his wealth.

In a moment of poetic justice, the pot traps Felix, sticking to him and carrying him all the way to the "North Pole," leaving him stunned in the snow.

Conclusion and Reflection

The pot returns to Casper and Clara, spilling its contents and providing them with enough resources to survive the winter. More importantly, the couple is finally able to "help out other people who were struggling to get by," mirroring the pot's own "cheerful, rambunctious" spirit.

The episode concludes by prompting listeners to reflect on their own habits. By highlighting how Felix's behavior was "abominable" and "wasteful," the story encourages the audience to adopt sustainable practices—such as using reusable containers or conserving energy—to ensure that we do not harm the planet through unnecessary waste. Ultimately, the tale teaches that true value is found not in hoarding, but in the circulation of resources and the act of giving.
