📋 Summary

The Shepherd's Disguise: Integrity Over Deception

The Rise and Fall of a Fraudulent Advisor

In the folk tale The Shepherd's Disguise, listeners are introduced to Lemel, a royal advisor who lacks genuine wisdom. Despite his title, Lemel is described as someone who does nothing but "loaf around the palace" and spend his days "sneaking around, trying to spy on his fellow advisors." He thrives by "eavesdropping" on his colleagues, stealing their hard-earned solutions, and presenting them to the Queen as his own. His claims of having a "brilliant brain" are merely a facade for his laziness and dishonesty.

The Queen’s Test of Truth

The Queen’s other advisors, tired of Lemel “always taking credit for things he hasn't done,” finally confront her. To settle the matter, the Queen decides to test Lemel with three “top secret” questions that require deep contemplation: the difference between a rising and setting sun, the distance between the heavens and the earth, and the content of her own thoughts. She warns him clearly: the answers must come from him "and you alone," or he will be "banished from the palace and the kingdom."

The Deception of the Shepherd

Facing an impossible task, Lemel panics, realizing these aren't problems he can solve by "eavesdropping." He ventures into the countryside, hoping to find a commoner to exploit. He eventually encounters a shepherd and convinces him to swap roles. The shepherd, donning Lemel’s "royal cloak and garments," enters the palace to face the Queen.

With remarkable wit, the shepherd answers the riddles:

  1. Regarding the sun, he states the difference is "the whole world."
  2. Regarding the distance to the heavens, he answers, "The heavens are as far from the earth as the earth is from the heavens."
  3. Finally, he reveals the truth about the Queen's thoughts: "Right now, you are thinking that I am Lemel... but the truth is, I am the shepherd."

Conclusion: Wisdom Through Integrity

The story concludes with the Queen dismissing the deceptive Lemel to the fields to "stay on with the sheep, who have no ideas to steal." Meanwhile, the shepherd is rewarded with a position as a royal advisor because he possesses the true "brilliant brain"—one rooted in honesty, humility, and collaboration. The narrative serves as a poignant reminder that while shortcuts and lies might provide temporary gain, true success and recognition are earned through integrity and the ability to work harmoniously with others to find solutions.
