📋 Summary

The Wisdom of the Queen

In this folktale, a king and queen rule their kingdom with equal partnership. When an aggressive ruler known as the "Overlord" begins threatening neighboring lands, the king leaves to defend their realm. During his absence, the queen governs wisely, ensuring the land remains at peace. To cope with the anxiety of her husband's long absence, she learns to play the "lute," a "pear-shaped stringed instrument." She discovers that the music not only "calmed her mind and warmed her heart" but also possessed a unique ability to influence those around her, causing everyone in the palace to "sway to the music."

The Crisis and the Clever Disguise

When the king is eventually captured, he sends a "crumpled scroll of paper" to the queen, begging her to sell their possessions to pay a ransom. The queen realizes that depleting their kingdom's wealth would only impoverish their people and that the greedy Overlord might simply imprison her as well. Relying on her own ingenuity, she chooses a different path. She cuts her hair, dons a musician's cloak, and disguises herself as a male lute player to infiltrate the Overlord's castle, proving that "sometimes, all you need to set you free is music."

The Power of Music as a Ransom

Upon arriving at the Overlord's domain, the queen plays her instrument. The music is so transformative that even the "malicious" Overlord is captivated, causing his guards to "drop their shoulders" and sway. Impressed by her talent, the Overlord grants her a wish. The queen cleverly asks for one of his prisoners—her husband. The king, unaware of his rescuer's identity, is deeply moved by the musician's performance throughout their journey home, even suggesting that the lute player join his court. The queen eventually returns home ahead of him, shedding her disguise to resume her royal role.

A Reunion and Reflection

Upon the king's return, he is initially furious, believing the queen had ignored his pleas for help. He recounts his rescue by a "young lute player" whose music was "so clear, so vivid." When the queen reveals her true identity by stepping forward with her lute, the king is struck with realization and remorse. He apologizes for doubting her "courage, her wisdom, her love." The story concludes by highlighting the profound impact of music, illustrating that while the king initially believed "gold coins" were the only way to secure his freedom, it was the queen’s artistic brilliance and strategic mind that truly saved them.
