📋 Summary

The Power of Wit: A Summary of Stella and the Dragon

In this episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear narrates the Romanian folktale of "Stella and the Dragon." The story serves as a poignant reminder that true strength is not defined by physical prowess, but by the power of the mind, quick-wittedness, and the courage to protect one's family.

The Farmer and the Unexpected Blessing

Stella and her husband, Ovi, lived a simple, happy life on their farm, yet they harbored a deep longing for children. One night, after wishing upon the brightest star, they returned home to find their house filled with 100 children. While they embraced this "gift" with open hearts, the practical reality of feeding and supporting such a large family quickly became overwhelming. As food began to grow scarce, Stella realized she had to take action. She left her husband and children to seek a solution, eventually encountering the giant green dragon who terrorized the local villagers and hoarded vast amounts of gold in his lair.

The Contest of Strength

Rather than fleeing from the dragon, Stella saw an opportunity. She boldly confronted the beast, introducing herself as "Stella the Powerful." When the dragon threatened to eat her, Stella challenged his perception of strength. She proposed a bet: if she could prove she was stronger than him, she would earn his gold to feed her children. The dragon, arrogant and accustomed to fear, agreed.

He chose a test of throwing boulders. Knowing she lacked the physical capacity to match the dragon's might, Stella employed psychological warfare. She pointed to the moon, claiming that if she threw the boulder with her full force, she might "knock it out of orbit." The dragon, intimidated by the potential cosmic consequences and Stella's unwavering confidence, became terrified. He conceded the contest, declaring, "you have won the contest, Stella the Powerful."

The Final Deception

Securing the gold was only half the battle; Stella still had to transport it home and ensure the dragon wouldn't retaliate. She convinced the dragon that she had "100 children, each one as strong as I am," implying that they were as dangerous as she was. When the dragon arrived at the farm and saw the children running toward them, he mistook their joyful excitement for a predatory hunger. Terrified of being eaten by 100 "strong little humans," the dragon dropped the gold and fled, never to return.

Conclusion: Redefining Power

Stella’s victory highlights that being "strong isn't always about muscles and bones." Her success was rooted in her ability to remain calm under pressure and use her intellect to overcome a seemingly insurmountable threat. By the end of the tale, the family lived comfortably, proving that courage, combined with a sharp mind, is the most formidable weapon of all. The episode concludes by prompting listeners to reflect on their own sources of strength—encouraging them to recognize that skills, support systems, and mental resilience are what truly make a person powerful.
