📋 Summary

The Starfruit Tree: A Lesson in Greed and Generosity

Introduction

In this encore episode of the Circle Round podcast, host Rebecca Shear presents "The Starfruit Tree," a Vietnamese folktale centered on the contrasting values of two sisters. The story, featuring performances by Stephanie Hsu, serves as a poignant reminder that kindness and generosity are far more valuable than material wealth.

The Inheritance and the Contrast in Character

Following the death of their mother, two sisters, Sang and Kim, were tasked with dividing the family estate. While their mother requested that everything be split "50-50," the older sister, Sang, proved to be "greedy and selfish," ultimately seizing the majority of the inheritance for herself. She left her younger sister, Kim, with only a "tiny run-down shack" and a neglected, "scrawny" starfruit tree. Despite this injustice, the kind-hearted Kim remained content and focused on nurturing the tree, hoping to sell its fruit to repair her humble home.

The Raven’s Reward

Kim’s hard work paid off, and the tree eventually bore hundreds of golden starfruit. However, a giant raven appeared and began "devouring every single starfruit in sight." Instead of shooing the bird away, Kim showed compassion, acknowledging the bird’s hunger. Moved by this "kindness," the raven offered Kim a reward: a trip to an "Island of Gold." The raven instructed Kim to bring a sack no longer than "three feet" to collect her treasure. Kim followed these instructions perfectly, and with the resulting wealth, she rebuilt her home and supported the less fortunate, becoming a pillar of prosperity in her community.

The Consequences of Greed

Upon discovering the source of Kim’s wealth, the jealous Sang manipulated her sister into trading properties. Sang, driven by the desire for more, stood under the starfruit tree awaiting the raven. When the bird returned, Sang demanded a reward. When the raven gave the same instruction—to bring a sack no longer than three feet—Sang ignored the advice, bringing a "six-foot sack" instead. She greedily crammed the bag with so much gold that the raven struggled to carry it.

As they flew over the sea, the heavy, oversized sack caused the bird to falter. When Sang demanded the bird "fly higher" despite the weight, the raven released his talons, dropping the gold into the ocean. Ultimately, Sang was left stranded on the island, while Kim continued to live a life defined by sharing, planting an orchard of trees and offering fruit to everyone around her.

Conclusion

The story concludes with a call to action for listeners to practice generosity in their own lives. Whether by sharing a toy or visiting a relative, the episode emphasizes that true success lies not in what we hoard, but in what we share with others. As the tale of the starfruit tree illustrates, a "golden heart" is the most valuable treasure one can possess.
