📋 Summary

Rabbit's Wish: A Lesson in Self-Acceptance

In the latest episode of the podcast Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear presents a folk tale titled "Rabbit's Wish." The story serves as a poignant reminder that self-worth is not defined by physical stature, but by the unique attributes one possesses. Through the journey of a protagonist who believes her small size makes her "insignificant," the narrative explores the dangers of vanity and the vital importance of self-appreciation.

The Desire for Greatness

At the beginning of the story, Rabbit is depicted as "eensy weensy puny little me," possessing "nubby, fuzzy stumps" for ears and a body that she feels makes her a target for predators. She views herself as being at the "wrong end of an all-you-can-eat buffet" for larger animals like Lion and Eagle. Despite Earth Spirit’s reassurance that she was fashioned to be "one of the swiftest animals around" and "one of the smartest," Rabbit remains blinded by her desire to be "enormous" like an Elephant or "strong" like a Bull.

The Trickster’s Gambit

To earn her transformation, Earth Spirit sets a challenging task: Rabbit must retrieve a "whisker from Lion" and a "feather from Eagle." Demonstrating the very intelligence she initially undervalued, Rabbit employs her "crafty tricks" to manipulate her predators. She convinces Lion that his whisker is "magic" and can create "two rabbits," and similarly tricks Eagle into believing her feather can double her food. By outsmarting these "big scary animals," Rabbit proves that her "swift mind" is a formidable tool, even if she lacks physical might.

The Burden of Being Big

When Earth Spirit finally grants the wish, the consequences are immediate and disastrous. Rabbit transforms into a larger creature, but her new body is "all out of proportion." She becomes "gawky" and uncoordinated, unable to escape her predators because she can no longer fit into her "snug burrow." This moment of crisis forces Rabbit to realize that her previous form was not a weakness, but a functional necessity. She begs Earth Spirit to reverse the spell, admitting, "I was fine before... I was awesome!"

Small Can Be Best of All

Earth Spirit cannot fully reverse the wish, but provides a compromise: Rabbit shrinks back to her original size, but retains her now-long ears. These ears act as an early-warning system, allowing her to "hear them coming from a mile away." This physical change acknowledges her growth without compromising her nature.

Ultimately, the story concludes with a powerful moral: "Bigger doesn't always mean better. Sometimes, small can be best of all." By the end of the tale, Rabbit ceases her longing to be like the Elephant or the Giraffe. The episode encourages listeners—particularly children—to identify their own strengths, whether it is being a "helpful person," practicing an instrument, or keeping their room clean. The narrative effectively shifts the focus from external comparison to internal validation, teaching that embracing one's own identity is the true path to feeling good about oneself.
