📋 Summary

The Tale of the Selfish Pair

In the Russian folktale "The Patched-Up Coat," we are introduced to a couple living on a steep hill who are defined by being "especially selfish." Their stinginess knows no bounds; they demand payment for the simplest favors, such as a cup of sugar or a ride in their cart. When a "weary traveler"—a soldier returning from war—arrives at their home seeking shelter, the couple forces him to perform labor, feeds him "cold lumpy porridge" while they gorge on "scrumptious" chicken soup, and denies him a place on their sofa, insisting he sleep on the floor with only his "threadbare" coat for warmth.

The Soldier’s Clever Deception

The soldier, realizing the depth of the couple's greed, decides to teach them a lesson. He cooks up a plan, smearing his face with "thick, greasy" butter to simulate the heat of exertion. He repeatedly knocks on the couple's door, claiming he is "so hot and stuffy" that he needs windows and doors opened, despite the freezing winter night. By feigning intense heat, he makes the couple believe his "shabby, patched-up coat" possesses magical, heat-retaining properties.

The Price of Greed

Driven by envy and the desire for the soldier’s perceived "magic coat," the couple offers him a "goose-down jacket," a fine horse, and a "bag of silver coins" in exchange for his rags. The soldier, feigning reluctance to part with his coat, eventually agrees to the trade. He rides away "warm, snuggly and laughing," leaving the couple with a coat that offers no protection against the biting cold. When the couple tries to wear the coat themselves, they are met with the harsh reality of the freezing weather, eventually forcing the man to pick up travelers on his way home just to "huddle up" for warmth.

A Transformation of Character

The story concludes with the couple realizing they have been "tricked." Having experienced the discomfort of the cold and the necessity of human connection, they vow to "never give anyone the cold shoulder" again. The narrative serves as a poignant reminder that, as host Rebecca Sheer notes, "when we help others, we help make the world a warmer, sunnier place." Through the soldier’s wit, the selfish scoundrels are transformed, turning their house on the hill from a place of exclusion into one of newfound generosity.
