📋 Summary

The Horse of a Different Color: A Lesson in Virtue

In this classic folktale presented by Circle Round, listeners are taken on a journey through a story titled "The Horse of a Different Color." Originating from diverse cultures across the Spanish-speaking world, as well as Poland and Norway, this narrative explores themes of integrity, hard work, and the rewards of selfless behavior.

The Problem of the Trampled Cornfield

The story centers on a hardworking farmer and her three daughters: Greta, Maria, and Valentina. Their livelihood depends entirely on a cornfield, which sustains them through the "harsh, frosty winter." Disaster strikes when the farmer discovers her field is being destroyed nightly by an unknown intruder. While Greta and Maria attempt to keep watch, they prioritize their need to "snooze" over their mother’s plea, ultimately failing to catch the thief. Valentina, however, takes the task seriously, using a cowbell and a lasso to remain alert until she encounters the culprit.

The Encounter with the Magical Horse

At the stroke of midnight, Valentina discovers that the thief is a "magnificent horse" that "glows with every color of the rainbow." Unlike most who would seek to sell such a creature for "pots and pots of money," Valentina chooses mercy. She strikes a deal: if the horse stops destroying their crops, she will set it free. The horse, surprised that Valentina is "not like most people," reveals its ability to speak and offers her three wishes in gratitude for her kindness.

Acts of Generosity and Reward

Valentina’s first wish is selfless; she asks the horse to restore the cornfield to save her family from ruin. The horse grants this, transforming the field into a harvest "brimming with tall, hardy stalks." Later, after her sisters squander the family's inheritance, a governor announces a contest where the winner receives a "chest full of gold." Valentina, needing to support her family, uses her second wish to gain the horse's help. Clad in "magnificent suit of armor" provided by the horse, she wins the contest by skillfully tossing an apple into the governor's lap.

A Legacy of Kindness

Following her victory, Valentina’s sisters realize the error of their ways and commit to helping on the farm. Rather than using her final wish for personal gain, Valentina chooses to pass the opportunity on to others, asking the horse to "grant three new wishes to someone else who might need them."

The story serves as a poignant reminder of the value of character. As the horse notes, most people would have chosen "money, power, [or] fame," but Valentina’s willingness to prioritize her family and the needs of others demonstrates that true wealth lies in one's heart. Through this engaging adaptation, Circle Round highlights that when you act with compassion, the rewards often transcend mere material gain.
