📋 Summary

The Fisherman's Leftovers: A Tale of Kindness and Reward

Introduction: The Dreamer in the Fishing Village

In the latest episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Sheer presents a heartwarming folktale originating from Japan titled "The Fisherman's Leftovers." The story follows a young man named Hiroshi who lives on a "small green island in a vast blue sea." Despite his size, Hiroshi harbors a grand ambition: to become the "best fisherman this village has ever seen." However, his older brothers frequently mock him, calling him a "pint-sized fellow" and ridiculing his "scrawny arms" and "tiny torso," insisting he is not "strapping and strong" enough to handle the ocean's bounty.

The Acts of Selflessness

Determined to prove himself, Hiroshi takes a position as the cook on his brothers' fishing boat. While his brothers are concerned only with their "daily catch," Hiroshi notices the significant amount of food wasted after every meal. Instead of discarding the leftovers, he chooses to "toss the leftovers overboard and feed them to the fish." He views this as a "marvelous thank you gift," treating the fish as his "dearest companions" and offering them "morsel after morsel of leftover food" throughout their seven-day journey at sea. This consistent act of compassion highlights Hiroshi’s character: he possesses a "big heart" and prioritizes "selflessness, compassion, and kindness" over personal gain.

The Miraculous Discovery

On the seventh night, an extraordinary event occurs. After feeding the fish, Hiroshi notices the boat is no longer rocking on the waves but appears to be resting on "miles and miles of sand." Upon investigating, he discovers a beach that "looks like gold"—glistening, shimmering, and sparkling under the moonlight. Believing it to be a "souvenir" of this magical night, Hiroshi fills a bucket with the sand. When the boat returns to the water the next morning, his skeptical brothers dismiss his story as a hallucination, suggesting his "brain sounds as scrambled as an egg." However, when Hiroshi presents the bucket, they are shocked to discover the sand is actually "real gold."

The Goddess's Judgment

Greed quickly takes hold of the brothers, who demand a share of the wealth, claiming, "You should share your gold with us!" Their conflict is interrupted by the voice of the "Goddess of the Sea," who intervenes to declare that the gold belongs solely to Hiroshi. She explains that the treasure is a direct reward for his long-term dedication to feeding the fish, which she refers to as "my children." The Goddess affirms that his "virtues deserve a reward," effectively silencing the brothers' greed and forcing them to acknowledge their own lack of character.

Conclusion: A Legacy of Generosity

The story concludes with a transformation in the family dynamic. The brothers, humbled by the Goddess, cease their mockery. Hiroshi uses his newfound wealth to build his own boat, continuing his life on the water with the freedom to "sail out on the water and catch fish and feed fish whenever his generous heart desired." The episode serves as a gentle reminder to listeners that kindness, even when directed toward the smallest of creatures, does not go unnoticed and can lead to unexpected and magical rewards.
