Finding the Light: A Journey from Eternal Darkness to Seasonal Balance

The World in Eternal Darkness

In the frozen lands of the far north, a young man and his grandmother live in a world trapped in "eternal night." Once, the land enjoyed long, luminous summer days, but the light had mysteriously "vanished" and "disappeared without a trace," leaving the inhabitants in a state of perpetual winter. While many had attempted to find the lost light, they either returned "empty-handed" or were lost to the "wide open wilderness."

A Flame of Determination

Despite the daunting nature of the quest, the young man feels a "tiny flame, a fire of determination" stirring in his heart. Refusing to accept a life of darkness, he sets out on a journey across the "inky black tundra." His resolve is met with skepticism, but he remains steadfast in his mission to restore the natural cycle of "day and night and summer and winter."

The Raven’s Gift

During his arduous trek, the young man encounters a raven in a snow cave. The raven, a creature of the tundra, provides crucial guidance, advising the young man to head south. To aid him, the raven plucks a feather, instructing him to "put it on" when the time is right. This magical token becomes the key to the young man's ultimate success.

Confronting the Thief of Light

Upon reaching a hill shaped like a ring, the young man discovers the source of the world's darkness: an old man who has been "shoveling snow" to build a massive mound, effectively trapping the light inside his hut. The old man reveals that he stole the light to enjoy his own "personal summer every day of the year," demonstrating a selfish desire to hoard the warmth that rightfully belonged to the rest of the world.

The Restoration of the Seasons

In a moment of quick thinking, the young man lunges into the hut, retrieves the ball of light, and flees. As he is pursued by the old man, he recalls the raven's feather. By placing it behind his ear, he transforms into a raven, soaring into the sky. In his flight, he tears off pieces of the light and flings them down to Earth.

Through this act, he creates the rhythm of the world:

  • The Summer Days: Flung quickly, the light creates long, radiant days.
  • The Winter Nights: By waiting between tosses, he creates the long, cold nights of winter.

By returning the light to the sky, the young man restores the balance of the four seasons, ensuring that the villagers can once again "bask in the light." The story concludes with the young man returning home to his grandmother, having successfully brought back the light that had been missing for so long, forever changing the world for the better.
