📋 Summary

The Deceptive Merchant and the Empty Well

The story centers on a "successful merchant" whose primary motivation in life is an insatiable desire for wealth. Unlike those who value family or basic needs, his singular focus is to find "new ways to make his coin purse jingle." During a chance encounter on a quiet road, he discovers a cow trapped in an abandoned well. Seeing an opportunity for profit, he attempts to extract the animal, only to be interrupted by a farmer traveling with three rare white camels laden with "precious grain."

Driven by greed, the merchant concocts a elaborate lie. He claims the pit is not an ordinary water well, but a "cow well." He tells the farmer that by dropping a cowbell into the well at night, one can harvest a new cow every morning. The merchant’s deception is calculated, using the farmer's desire to expand his cattle farm against him. He successfully swindles the farmer out of his 24 bags of grain and his three prized white camels, leaving the farmer with nothing but a useless dry well. To further conceal his identity, the merchant gives his name as "Where I Should Dance," a cryptic fabrication that eventually leads to his undoing.

The Mayor’s Clever Retribution

After discovering the deception, the farmer tracks the merchant to the marketplace. When he asks vendors where he can find "Where I Should Dance," he accidentally triggers a city-wide dance party, as the townspeople take his question literally. The confusion is resolved by the local mayor, who listens to the farmer’s plight and recognizes the description of the unique white camels.

Demonstrating wisdom and authority, the mayor orchestrates a trap for the merchant. She sends a note to the merchant’s home, addressed to a person named "What I Should Do," inviting him to the town hall. Upon his arrival, the merchant expects a lucrative business deal, but instead, he is confronted by the mayor. She masterfully turns his own deceptive wordplay against him, stating, "I know what you should do: You should give back the three white camels and 24 bags of grain you swindled from the farmer."

The Lesson of Integrity

Caught in his own trap, the merchant is forced to return the stolen goods. The experience leaves him humiliated and remorseful, leading him to vow that he would "never again let greed get the better of him." The story concludes with the farmer successfully retrieving his property and finding true joy in his success, while the merchant is left to reflect on the consequences of his dishonesty.

Ultimately, the tale of "Cow Wells and Cow Bells" serves as a classic folktale warning against the destructive nature of greed. It emphasizes that while lies might bring short-term gain, they often lead to "hurting another person" and inevitably result in a loss of integrity. The merchant’s transformation from a heartless opportunist to a man humbled by justice reinforces the importance of honesty and the idea that true prosperity is not found in exploitation.
