📋 Summary

Introduction: The She-Wolves of Medieval England

In the inaugural episode of The Rest Is History’s mini-series on the "she-wolves of medieval England," hosts Tom Holland and Helen Castor explore the lives of powerful women who defied the traditional gender constraints of the Middle Ages. The discussion begins by contrasting the 12th-century political landscape with the 16th-century "monstrous regiment of women," a term famously coined by John Knox to condemn female rule as "unnatural" and "abominable." While the 16th century saw a surge of queens—Mary Tudor, Mary Queen of Scots, and Elizabeth I—due to the vagaries of the hereditary system, the 12th century faced a more foundational crisis: the absence of established rules for succession.

The Crisis of Succession and Empress Matilda

Henry I, son of William the Conqueror, faced a dynastic catastrophe when his only legitimate son, William Atheling, died in the sinking of the White Ship in 1120. With no other legitimate male heirs, Henry turned to his daughter, Matilda. Having been married at age eight to the Holy Roman Emperor Henry V, Matilda had proven her capability as a regent, earning the title "the good Matilda." Henry I forced his nobles to swear allegiance to her, attempting to secure her place as the future ruler. However, the medieval perception of kingship—defined by the "sacral dimension" of anointing and the functional roles of "lawgiver" and "warrior"—created a structural barrier for a woman, as these roles were viewed as exclusively masculine.

The Anarchy: A Kingdom Divided

Upon Henry I’s death in 1135, his nephew Stephen of Blois seized the opportunity, rushing to England to be crowned and anointed, thus becoming "impregnated" with the sacramental authority of kingship. This triggered a 19-year civil war known as "the anarchy," a period where, as the chroniclers described, "Christ and his saints slept." The conflict was characterized by brutal violence and a power vacuum that highlighted the necessity of a strong, singular monarch. Matilda, though "indomitable" and "brave," faced significant obstacles. Her attempts to rule were met with resistance from both the Londoners and the clergy, who criticized her for adopting an "arrogant demeanour" rather than the "modest gait and bearing proper to the gentle sex."

The Legacy of Female Rule

Matilda’s failure to secure her own coronation was not due to a lack of ability, but the rigid societal expectations of the time. Her eventual compromise—the Treaty of Winchester in 1153—secured the throne for her son, Henry II, rather than herself. This marked the end of the anarchy and established the Plantagenet line. Matilda retired to Normandy, becoming the "elder stateswoman" of her son’s regime. Her epitaph, "Great by birth, greater by marriage, greatest in her offspring," perfectly encapsulates her historical role as a bridge between dynasties. While her direct reign was thwarted, she successfully demonstrated that women could transmit the right to the crown, leaving behind a complex legacy that simultaneously proved the viability of female lineage while reinforcing the gendered anxieties of the era.
