Furthermore, insect farming requires significantly fewer natural resources, addressing the fact that 90% of fresh water is currently consumed by farming and livestock production.

Beyond sustainability, insect farming offers economic opportunities for poorer communities, providing both food security and jobs. However, transitioning to an insect-based diet requires overcoming deep-seated psychological barriers. In North America and Europe, there is a strong resistance to eating whole insects, despite the fact that people already consume insect products like honey.

To move forward, experts emphasize several key requirements:

  • Regulatory Frameworks: Establishing rules for the safe production and processing of insects as food.
  • Innovation in Processing: Determining whether insects should be consumed whole, ground into powder, or processed into new, unrecognizable food forms by scientists.
  • Culinary Leadership: Master chefs like José Andrés are already incorporating insects into their menus, arguing that "we need to feed people in a sustainable way." As Andrés notes, the future belongs to those who learn to produce protein efficiently.
