Easy english expression rehashed.
Hello everybody.
My name is coach shane and welcome to easy english expressions.
Come on, let's master english.
Hello everybody.
Coach Shane here.
EQ number 354.
Ooh, another phrasal verb.
This is a sad, it can be a sad phrasal verb, but it's very useful.
Check it out.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression, so good.
To be washed up.
To be washed up.
W-A-S-H-E-D, washed up, you peep.
Well, this is a phrasal verb and I can think of two meanings.
Number one.
To be washed up means that you went to the bathroom and you washed your face, washed your hands.
Maybe you took a shower, took a bath.
You are washed up, completely cleaned.
Yes, that's one possible meaning.
But there's another meaning.
He is washed up.
She is washed up.
They are washed up.
And what does this mean?
It means that they no longer have talent.
They're not good anymore.
And this happens when you get old.
It's true.
I'll give you an example.
Does everybody know the rock and roll band, the Rolling Stones?
Oh, my goodness.
1960s, 1970s.
Boy, they were the rock and roll band.
It's amazing.
And then in the 1980s and the 1990s.
And then in the 2000s, and still now, even today, these grandfathers are giving concerts.
And I'm sorry, it's not the Rolling Stones.
Now they're the Rolling Bones.
They're a bunch of grandfathers.
They're washed up.
You know, stop, guys.
Let us listen to the old music and enjoy, but don't make it painful for us.
Yeah, it's true.
Bruce Willis.
God, you know, he's the only Hollywood actor that I think deserves an Oscar.
He's such a good actor.
But let's be serious.
Come on, I'm honest.
He's washed up now.
I can't imagine another diehard movie with Bruce Willis.
I'm sorry.
He's washed up.
It's not going to happen.
He's washed up.
What about me?
What am I?
I am nothing.
I was a runner.
When I was young, I was a runner.
I was pretty good.
5K, 10K, triathlons.
I loved it.
I loved it.
So why don't I run anymore now?
Because I'm honest to myself.
I'm washed up.
Yeah, I'm washed up.
I can't do it anymore.
Not like I used to.
I was good.
But now I'm washed up.
So I retired.
What about me as an English teacher?
Do you think I'm washed up?
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
I got a long way to go before I'm washed up as an English teacher.
I haven't even begun.
Let's check out a dialogue.
Shane, why don't you sing again?
I'm too old.
But you were so excellent.
That was a long time ago.
I'm all washed up now.
Yes.
Many of you might not know it, but I was an excellent singer.
Oh, yes.
Have you heard of Pavarotti?
Well, let's just say if Pavarotti could sing it, so could Shane.
I'm the barber of Seville.
Oh, yes.
That's nothing.
But I don't do it anymore.
No, I'm all washed up.
Yeah.
My vocal cords are too old.
I don't have the power in my stomach.
I'm all washed up.
Too many years of smoking.
Oh, I quit smoking.
I'm recovering from that.
But still, I'm all washed up.
What about you?
Are you all washed up?
Are you completely washed up?
Are you washed up in any specific area?
Let us know.
Be honest.
Don't be shy.
It happens.
Sometimes you need to be young to be good.
Sometimes you need to be old to be good.
But you're good and then you're not good anymore.
Well, you're washed up.
Look at Tiger Woods, the golfer.
You know, some golfers, they get better like wine.
They get better with age.
But boy, he's washed up.
I'm telling you, it's because of his personal problems.
I'm serious.
You don't think so?
I'm serious.
His relationship, his future with his relationships washed up.
His golf washed up.
I'm sorry if you're a fan of Tiger Woods.
That's great.
I'm not.
I used to be, but I'm not.
He's washed up.
He's history.
He's nothing.
He's yesterday's news.
He's washed up.
So long, Tiger.
Who's the next lion to roar in and golf?
Anyway, washed up.
It happens.
It happens to us.
Accept it.
That's today's expression.
Have a fantastic day.
And together, let's listen to the dialogue two more times.
Oh, and let's master English.
Shane, why don't you sing again?
I'm too old.
But you were so excellent.
That was a long time ago.
I'm all washed up now.
Shane, why don't you sing again?
I'm too old.
But you were so excellent.
That was a long time ago.
I'm all washed up now.
Thanks so much for listening.
