Easy english expression rehashed.
Hello everybody, my name is coach shane and welcome to easy english expressions.
Come on, let's master english.
Hey everybody, coach shane here.
I'm so happy to bring you another e-cube podcast.
Today's expression is fun, But we usually use this expression on a Friday or a Saturday.
But maybe you can use it today.
Yeah.
Give it a listen.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is great.
It is, let's throw a party.
Excuse me.
Let's throw a party.
P-A-R-T-Y.
So party, you know, birthday party, wedding party, anniversary party, retirement party.
There are many Christmas party, New Year's party.
There are many types of parties, a dinner party.
Now, some parties are loud.
They have music.
People are singing and dancing.
Maybe they're drinking.
Anyway, it's loud, right?
And some parties are much more quiet, very relaxed, very enjoyable.
There's some classical music, and the conversation is light, and it's much more serious.
So there's a difference in the verb that we use.
So if you want to have a nice quiet party, maybe for your grandmother, who's 97 years old, you might want to have a party.
But if you're like me, no, that's not true.
Me, I have a party.
But if you're like a lot of people, you know, let's say you're 25 years old.
Do you want to have a party?
Or do you want to throw a party?
Have a good time.
Be with your friends and I don't know, go drinking, go dancing, play games.
Yeah, lots of people do.
In that case, you throw a party.
T-H-R-O-W.
Yes, of course you can throw a party for your grandmother.
But having a party is more – now, I had – my grandmother, she died.
But I remember the last birthday party I went to for my great-grandmother, she was 93 years old.
It was a great time and it was the last party, birthday party that she had.
And to be honest, the party lasted for probably 30 minutes because she needed to take a nap.
So it wasn't too loud.
We sang happy birthday.
That was about it.
So we had a party for my grandmother.
We didn't throw one.
But for me on my birthday, December 22nd.
Oh, absolutely.
My grandparents would throw me a party and it was a great time.
Let's check out the dialogue.
Are you going to throw a party?
From what?
It's your birthday.
I'm too old for birthday parties.
Oh, come on.
Yeah, I know some of you, maybe many of you agree.
I'm too old for birthday parties.
Well, hey, a birthday party doesn't have to be five people, 10 people, 50 people.
A birthday party can be just you.
Or maybe you and your loved one, you and your close family.
It doesn't have to be big.
And birthday parties, you know, yes, you're a year older.
But hey, that's life.
Every year, every day, every second, you're getting older.
So don't cry about it.
Don't hide from it.
Accept it.
Now, with age comes wisdom.
Hopefully, with age comes wrinkles.
That's the truth.
But you get smarter.
You get to know things better.
And that's a good thing.
Now, for me, I'm 47 years old.
And my birthday coming this year, is this going to be my 48th birthday?
Really?
Oh my God.
Yeah.
This December, I'm going to be 48.
I'm getting close to 50.
And you know what?
So what?
I remember when I was young, like in high school and I loved my birthday.
I never understood my dad who hated his birthday parties.
No, just sing happy birthday.
That's it.
No party, no party, no party.
And now I understand.
Yeah, I'm not into the parties.
I like a quiet birthday.
But I do like my birthday.
And I hope that you do too.
So tell me, do you like to have birthday parties for yourself?
Or do you like people to throw you a birthday party?
You got to pick one of them.
Don't be shy of your birthday.
Don't be embarrassed about your birthday.
Be happy.
Yeah!
Happy birthday.
It's cool.
It's an anniversary.
It's a day that you can sit back and say, I made it another year.
Was it a good year?
Was it a bad year?
What were the good things?
What were the bad things?
If you had lots of good things, maybe you should throw a party.
If you had lots of bad things, maybe you should just have a small, quiet party.
If it's your birthday, happy birthday.
If it's not, well, then happy birthday on your birthday.
Okay?
Let's check out the dialogue two more times.
Are you going to throw a party?
For what?
It's your birthday.
Ha!
I'm too old for birthday parties.
Are you going to throw a party?
For what?
It's your birthday.
Ha!
I'm too old for birthday parties.
Thanks so much for listening.
