Easy English Expression, rehashed!
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English!
Hi, everyone.
Constance here.
How's it going?
Ever hear someone say a stroke of luck?
Let's find out what it means.
Here's E cubed number 295.
Enjoy.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is fantastic.
It is a stroke of luck.
A stroke.
S-T-R-O-K-E. of luck, L-U-C-K.
So a stroke, S-T-R-O-K, that word has many, many possible definitions.
So don't think of it as just that word.
Think of it as the expression, a stroke of luck, a stroke of luck.
Now, what does this phrase mean?
It means something that happened recently.
By pure luck, by 100% chance, it was lucky, lucky, lucky, unbelievably lucky.
Okay, so let me give you an example.
A long time ago, back in 1989, I was in San Francisco.
Just by chance, just for two days, I think.
Maybe just one day.
Yeah, no, it was just one day.
And I was just doing some, meeting some people.
And then I left.
And the day after that, The San Francisco earthquake occurred and many, many people were died.
Many people were injured.
It was a complete tragedy for the city in 1989.
And once again, I was there crying.
The day before.
I got so lucky that I was not there on the day of the earthquake.
It was a stroke of luck.
It was complete luck.
Thank God I was very lucky.
I'll give you another example.
I used to be in the Army.
Yep, I was a U.S. soldier a long time ago.
This is back in 1986.
And when I was in the Army, I decided that I wanted to be airborne.
And that means, you know, an Army soldier that also jumps out of airplanes with a parachute.
I thought that would be really cool.
So in order to be accepted for airborne, you had to take two tests a physical test and a written test.
And well, I'm a smart guy.
I wasn't worried about the written test, but the physical test was actually pretty tough.
So Monday was the physical test and Wednesday was the written test.
So I took my test on Monday.
And on Tuesday, yes, I passed.
Tomorrow was a written test.
So I was thinking to myself, yes, the written test will be easy.
I am going to be airborne.
I'm so excited.
You know, it was going to be a great opportunity.
I was thinking about, boy, I should buy a car.
I was thinking about a lot of crazy things.
And then on Tuesday afternoon, The day before the written test, my commander came up to me and said Shane, you now have orders to go to Korea.
The U.S.
Army was not going to send me to the airborne school.
They were going to send me to South Korea.
And I was so sad.
No, I want to be airborne.
I want to be cool and jump out of airplanes.
But no, I had to go to Korea.
But you know what?
Thanks to my going to Korea, I became an English teacher.
I met Korean people.
I realized that they have a difficulty in learning English and I realized I had fun teaching English.
It was a stroke of luck.
It was pure chance.
It was an unbelievable lucky situation that i was sent to korea.
Because of that, i'm your english coach.
It was a stroke of luck, pure luck, p-u-r-e.
Pure luck, pure chance.
Let's check out the dialogue.
How did you get such a perfect picture of a ufo?
Oh, It was a stroke of luck.
I was trying to film the full moon.
And the UFO just came into the shot?
Exactly.
In and out in two seconds.
Amazing, huh?
Oh, that would be really cool.
UFO.
You know, aliens.
E.T. up there in the sky.
I would love to see a UFO.
And I would love to actually...
Take a video of a UFO.
Or at least a picture.
And that's the case in this dialogue.
The guy was trying to film the moon.
He was filming the moon.
But inside that screen, a UFO came.
And he actually has a video of a UFO.
That's so cool.
Would you like to see a UFO?
Really?
I don't know, actually.
Think about it.
If we actually see a UFO and it really is, you know something from another world.
That probably means they have unbelievable technology and could kill us like that.
That's really scary.
Maybe I don't want to see a UFO.
Anyway, a stroke of luck.
Absolutely a stroke of luck.
So how did you find me?
Did you find my podcast first?
Did you search iTunes?
Did you find me on YouTube first?
Did you search YouTube?
Did you Google search me and just find me somehow?
My blog?
How?
I'm really curious as to how you found me.
Anyway, the important thing is you did find me and I found you.
And because we now know each other, To me, I think that's a stroke of luck.
It's pure chance.
It's pure luck.
And I absolutely love it.
Check out the dialogue two more times.
