Easy english expression rehashed.
Hello everybody.
My name is coach shane and welcome to easy english expressions.
Come on, let's master english.
How's your week going?
A lovely expression today to do a disservice to someone, something that we should not do, but an expression that we need to know.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is fantastique.
Listen carefully.
To do a disservice to someone.
To do somebody a disservice.
Okay, so to do a disservice.
That's the key verb.
Disservice.
To do what?
A disservice.
D-I-S-S-E-R-V-I-S.
So it's dis, D-I-S, and service.
So to service somebody means to help that person, to give that person assistance.
You might help them with their homework.
You might help them financially.
You might help them emotionally.
Doing something for somebody is doing a service. for somebody.
So, for example, when I go to the bank, if I bring in all my coins, the one cent penny, the five cent nickel, the 10 cent dime, let's say I have 200 coins.
Well, some banks charge people to change those coins into dollars, but my bank does it for free.
They do it as a service.
So they're doing a service to me.
But if your bank doesn't do that, well, that's not nice.
They charge you for changing money into money.
Well, they're doing you a disservice.
Yeah.
This is the idea.
I do these free expressions every day in the podcast, right?
And I told you that I would do this all year, all through 2015.
I'll continue doing these podcasts.
But let's say starting in March, I make the podcast, but you have to pay.
You have to pay money to actually listen to the podcast.
Is that cool?
Am I doing a service to you or am I doing a disservice to you?
Well, that's a tough one.
Nobody should work for free, but it doesn't matter.
I started doing it for free.
I should continue doing it for free.
Many people think like that, right?
Yeah, I understand.
I totally understand.
I have guys on YouTube and podcasts that I listen to that I learn from and I really respect.
But sometimes they stop making podcasts or videos for free and suddenly I have to pay for them.
Oh, man.
You know, if the price is OK, I do pay, of course.
But sometimes they charge too much and I can't afford to pay.
So, yeah, they're doing me wrong.
A disservice.
I don't like that.
So, once again, I promise that these podcasts will continue to be free, because I want to do a service to you.
Let's check out a dialogue.
You're giving your kid juice boxes?
Juice is good for you.
You're doing your kid a disservice.
Give him real fruit instead.
But this is all he likes.
Do you know those juice boxes?
You know like orange juice and grape juice and apple juice, but they sell it in a little paper box.
And especially kids love them.
They drink them after school.
They drink them at lunchtime.
Well, I was listening to the news yesterday and they were talking about how sugar is a big, huge health problem.
Kids especially are getting too much sugar.
And one of the big sources of sugar are those juice boxes.
That's right.
There's way too much sugar in those juice boxes.
That's why kids love them.
It's like sugar.
Of course they love it.
Give your children real fruit and not a juice box.
By giving them the juice boxes.
Yes, they love you because it tastes good, but you are actually doing a disservice to your child because you're actually making them unhealthy.
You're not helping them.
You think you're helping them because they're happy, but actually you're making their bodies weak.
You're not helping their bodies.
By giving them too much sugar, You're doing them a disservice.
Yeah, that's a tough one.
I know, I know.
Kids love them.
What are you going to do?
What are you going to do?
Yeah, got to start young, that's for sure.
Are you smoking?
Do you smoke?
If you do, you're doing your body a disservice.
You know that.
Yeah, I know smoking might help you calm down.
It helps you concentrate.
It makes you look good.
What?
No, no, no.
But actually, you know, you know the truth.
Smoking, if you're smoking, you're doing your body a disservice.
You are not helping your body.
Yeah.
Usually this expression is very commonly used when it comes to health.
Can you make an example sentence?
If you can.
Leave me a message.
I'll tell you how to leave me a message and I'm going to say thank you to some people that are helping me and helping this podcast out.
Let's check out that dialogue two more times.
