Off to today's expression.
Let's go back in time.
Today's podcast is so good.
It's a word.
It's a verb to ditch.
D-I-T-C-H.
To ditch someone.
Have you ever ditched anybody before?
I have been ditched before.
What does it mean to ditch somebody?
Does it sound like a nice expression?
No, it probably doesn't.
It sounds a little bit hard, right?
Yeah, and it's actually not a nice word.
To ditch somebody means to leave somebody, to run away from somebody so that they cannot follow you, so that they cannot be with you.
OK, so to ditch somebody means to lose somebody.
So I'll give you a simple example.
When I was young, 14 years old.
Yeah, you know, I'm a boy.
I was my sister.
She was seven years younger.
She was seven years old.
So when I was 14 years old and I went to the movies.
Sometimes my mother forced me to take my sister.
Can you imagine how embarrassed I was?
I'm a 14-year-old boy.
You know, I'm trying to be cool, going to the movies, and I have to bring my little sister?
Oh, it's terrible.
So I did.
I took my sister to the movie theater.
I bought her ticket, and then I ditched her.
I left her all alone.
So she had to go into the theater.
She had to find a seat.
She had to buy her own popcorn.
She had to go to the bathroom by herself.
And she had to go home by herself.
Was I a good brother or a bad brother?
I know I was a terrible brother.
I was horrible.
I know.
But it's reality.
That's, come on.
My mother should not have forced me to take my sister to the movies.
She should have known that I was going to ditch her.
I only did that once.
And if my sister's listening, I apologize that I ditched you at the movies.
Ah, whatever.
Have you ever been ditched?
I have been ditched.
I went out with some friends.
Well, I thought they were my friends.
And then they disappeared.
I'm all alone.
It's terrible to be ditched.
It's terrible.
I'll tell you why we use the word ditch after you listen to the dialogue.
Check it out.
Who's that guy?
I don't know.
I'm trying to ditch him.
Here he comes again.
Oh, help me, please.
Yeah, yeah, that's a good example.
Sometimes, especially I guess for women, sometimes there's a guy.
Maybe he's really strange, but he keeps coming up to you.
Hi.
Hi.
Can we have lunch together?
Hi.
What's your name?
Hi.
Do you live here?
Hi.
Can I sit next to you?
Hi.
Do you have a boyfriend?
Hi.
Yeah, and I guess women might not like that type of guy.
So if that guy keeps trying to follow the woman, she would ditch him.
She would try to lose him.
Why do we say ditch?
Well, the idea of a ditch, as a noun, there is a word, ditch.
It's a noun.
And there's a road and next to the road is where the water can flow and there's some trash.
You know that lower area, almost like a river or a stream, but just really low, not that deep.
And usually there's no water.
Only when it rains, there's water.
Usually it's dry.
That area is a ditch.
And once again, in the ditch, is it clean?
No.
No, usually it's kind of dirty.
Cans, cigarette butts, paper, other types of trash, right?
So in the ditch.
So that's the idea.
To ditch somebody would be to kick that person into the ditch so that you can run away on the road and be free.
To ditch somebody.
It's not nice.
I think probably most of us have done it.
Not everybody.
Some people are really nice people and they never ditch anybody.
But I think most of us have done it.
It's not nice.
So let's not do it in the future unless it's our brother or sister.
Yeah, it's not nice.
Don't worry.
Don't worry.
I'm your English coach.
I'm here online.
I promise I won't ditch you.
If I ditch you, you can – I don't know.
You can ask me why.
No, I won't.
I've been here – how many years have I been online?
I've been here like three or four years online and –
Compared to other English teachers online, I do a lot.
Videos, podcasts, every day.
You know, lots of free stuff.
I have my classes too.
I need more students.
Please join my classes.
But as long as you're here, as long as you listen to me, as long as you take my classes, sponsor me, say hi, tell your friends, I promise I won't ditch you.
Okay?
Let's check out the dialogue two more times.
Who's that guy?
I don't know.
I'm trying to ditch him.
Here he comes again.
Help me, please.
Who's that guy?
I don't know.
