Easy English Expression, rehashed.
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hey everybody, welcome back to E-Cube number 339.
Today's expression is great.
Like I said yesterday, my wife has been gone for over a week.
And I'm home alone with one big dog, three cats, two boys six years old and seven years old myself and, of course, my work.
I'm a little bit busy and getting everything done is not easy.
So today's expression is especially for me and probably you too, right?
Let's go back in time.
Oh boy, today's expression is so wonderful.
It is, listen carefully, bogged down.
Bogged down.
I'm bogged down.
Are you bogged down?
Okay, let me spell this out for you.
Bogged down.
B-O-G-G-E-D down.
D-O-W-N.
Two words.
It's a phrasal verb.
Bogged down.
To be bogged?
No.
To be bogged up?
No.
To be bogged down?
Yes.
To bog down?
It's possible.
Don't bog me down.
That might be possible.
But almost always it is bogged down.
Past participle, like an adjective.
I am bogged down.
You are bogged down.
What does this mean?
It means super, super busy.
So much work, you're almost dying.
Why does bogged down mean busy?
Well, it refers to bog, B-O-G.
A bog is the same thing as a swamp, S-W-A-M-P.
Do you know what a swamp is?
Do you know what a bog is?
Basically, it's like this.
You're walking in the forest and And then suddenly there are no trees, just grass.
And you keep walking.
And then you notice that the ground gets really soft.
And the ground almost bounces because there's water underneath.
And then eventually you fall, you fall into the water and it goes up to your knee.
It might go up to your hip.
It can be very deep.
This is a bog.
It looks like land, but actually it's not.
It's very weak land, very soft land.
There's lots of grass.
There might even be some trees, but it's just full of water.
So can you imagine if you're carrying your work, but the work is so heavy, the ground below you starts sinking and you go into the ground.
That is the idea of being bogged down.
You've got so much work that you're carrying your work on your shoulder and it's bringing you down down down, into the swamp, into the bog.
Does that make sense?
Do you have a good image of what it means to be bogged down?
Let's check out a dialogue.
Why didn't you text me back?
Oh, I'm sorry.
I was busy.
Didn't you see it?
I did, but I was so bogged down at the time.
It happens, you know, your husband, your boyfriend, your wife, your girlfriend is at work.
You send them a text message.
You say something cute like, are you my baby, baby, baby, baby?
And they don't respond.
So you send it again.
Are you my baby, baby, baby, baby?
And they don't respond.
So they must hate you.
So you get angry.
And their excuse, the person's excuse is always, I was so bogged down.
Is that true?
Are people that busy?
Are you bogged down?
Yeah, everybody listen.
If your husband or wife or girlfriend or boyfriend texts, you do your best and say yes, but I'm really busy.
I'll call you back.
I really recommend doing that.
The person is missing you.
The person likes you.
That's all.
So it's nice.
It's nice to be liked.
Don't feel harassed.
Unless, of course, your boyfriend or girlfriend or husband or wife is a psychotic person.
Then just break up with them.
But anyway, back to the expression.
Bogged down.
Are you bogged down these days?
It happens.
It definitely happens.
Me?
Hmm.
A little bit.
Yeah, these days a little bit busy because there are so many things I need to get going and there are so many things that are happening right now.
So yeah, not too bad, but I am losing hair, which means I am a little bit bogged down.
What about you?
The opposite of bogged down is, yeah, I'm free.
I've got lots of free time.
My work schedule is light.
So what is it?
Is your work schedule light or are you bogged down?
Check out the dialogue two more times.
Have a fantastic day.
And together, let's master English.
Why didn't you text me back?
Oh, I'm sorry.
I was busy.
Didn't you see it?
I did, but I was so bogged down at the time.
You don't love me.
Yes.
Why didn't you text me back?
Oh, I'm sorry.
I was busy.
Didn't you see it?
I did, but I was so bogged down at the time.
Thanks so much for listening.
